About The Position

As a Powerline Technician – Service at ATCO Electric, you’ll play a crucial role in maintaining and constructing rural and urban electrical distribution lines. Your work ensures reliable electricity supply to communities and businesses. Safety protocols and preventive maintenance are key aspects of this role. Additionally, as a journeyperson, you’ll assist in developing PLT Apprentices and other new employees.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid Journeyperson Powerline Technician Certificate
  • Valid or eligibility for Interprovincial Red Seal
  • Valid Class 5 vehicle operator’s license
  • Ability to obtain Class 1 or Class 3 Operator’s License
  • Valid First Aid Certificate
  • A proven safe work record, including driver’s abstract

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated knowledge of live line techniques using sticks and 25kv rubber glove work achieved through live line training is preferred.
  • Previous on call and troubleshooting experience preferred
  • Demonstrated skills in training of apprentices and development of team and individual performance
  • Personal computer experience an asset

Responsibilities

  • Construct, operate, inspect, and maintain overhead and underground power lines, substations, and related equipment.
  • Install and maintain street lighting systems and electrical apparatus.
  • Perform work on energized systems, including live line work, and execute system switching in accordance with standards and permits.
  • Complete planned maintenance, inspections, and troubleshooting, including diagnosing overhead and underground system faults.
  • Support installation, commissioning, and maintenance of electrical equipment and new construction projects.
  • Participate in standby rotation and respond to outages and emergency situations.
  • Schedule outages, prepare switching orders, and coordinate high-load moves.
  • Respond to customer requests (connections, disconnections, power quality concerns) and investigate and resolve customer issues.
  • Install, verify, and maintain electrical meters, including shipping, storage, and underground locates.
  • Maintain accurate field documentation, records, and system data using corporate systems and tools.
  • Adhere to all safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements; conduct safety audits and promote safe work practices.
  • Operate and maintain company vehicles and equipment.
  • Participate in safety meetings, prepare work plans, and complete job safety analyses.
  • Support incident investigations, training, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to apprentices and team members, as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support operational needs.
