About The Position

This position allows students to gain experience for a career as a Powerline Technician. The Powerline Technician Co-op Student will learn the skills relating to the construction, maintenance, and repair of, overhead and underground hydro distribution systems, as well as the maintenance and operation of vehicles and equipment pertaining to the line trade.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in the first or second year of Powerline Technician Co-op Program
  • Completion of at least one year of academic coursework with a solid understanding of core concepts electrical utility and powerline program
  • Able to perform the essential duties in all weather conditions
  • Ability to lift and carry 40Kg for 5 metres
  • Comfortable working at heights and in confined spaces
  • Demonstrated experience working with required hand tools
  • Able to work all shifts including weekends, as required
  • Demonstrated proficiency in a Windows environment and associated software applications
  • Quality of work – work is well planned and completed accurately
  • Is a fast learner who can adapt to an ever-changing environment
  • Sound time management and organization skills to ensure that deadlines are met
  • Effective communication skills (written, and verbal)
  • Embrace a culture of innovation and continuous improvement
  • Be a highly engaged motivated team player
  • Excellent interpersonal skills that build relationships with both internal and external customers
  • A valid Ontario Class G Driver's Licence with an excellent driving record
  • Well versed in the IHSA Safe Work practices guide and Electrical Utility Safety Rules

Nice To Haves

  • Previous Electrical Utility experience is an asset

Responsibilities

  • Assist with overhead work on energized primary and secondary systems
  • Support work on energized underground systems, including cables, terminations, and splicing
  • Help install and maintain streetlights
  • Participate in regular stand-by duty and emergency callouts
  • Assist in troubleshooting and analyzing faults in underground and overhead lines using tools, maps, and observation
  • Support the inspection, repair, and replacement of tools and equipment
  • Assist with the installation of wooden, concrete, steel, and fiberglass poles
  • Help install and replace domestic meters
  • Assist with trenching and cable installation, including making necessary connections
  • Maintain dielectric capacity of line vehicles by cleaning and repairing boom, bucket, and jib
  • Comply with all health, safety, and environmental legislation, including the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Oakville Hydro’s policies and procedures
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor
