Power Trader

Base Power Company•Austin, TX

About The Position

Base is seeking a Power Trader to trade around its retail load book and distributed battery fleet. The immediate focus is to develop a short-term trading strategy—up to 30 days out—for ERCOT, with near-term plans to expand the strategy into PJM and eventually other ISOs. The role will also strengthen Base’s longer-term strategy through rigorous, portfolio-construction-based management of generation and load exposure, and contribute to Trading & Risk’s long-term fundamental price views. The position is part of Base’s Trading & Risk team, which supports the grid performance and profitability of its distributed battery fleet. The team’s work spans device communications with balancing authorities, telemetry analysis, fleet aggregation and economic-dispatch algorithms, and financial portfolio management in wholesale energy markets. Base is a startup, so priorities and responsibilities may shift as business needs evolve. The company works in person and describes the environment as fast-moving and not a 9-to-5.

Requirements

  • At least 3–5 years of experience trading power products on a bank, utility, or merchant trading desk.
  • Direct exposure to forward curves, hedge instruments, and short-term markets.
  • Demonstrated experience in portfolio construction, including designing hedges across a book of exposures rather than focusing only on individual trades.
  • A fundamentals-based understanding of how congestion, transmission constraints, and load/generation balance affect price formation.
  • Deep experience in at least one ISO.
  • Ability to work as an individual contributor in a small, fast-moving team without an analyst bench.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on ability to build models in Python without relying on an analyst to implement ideas.

Responsibilities

  • Trade short-term power products to capture incremental margin, with the possibility of extending into longer-horizon and structured positions.
  • Strengthen Base’s hedge strategy using a portfolio-construction-based approach to manage exposure across the battery fleet and retail load book.
  • Contribute to in-house long-term price forecasts by incorporating market fundamentals, including congestion, transmission constraints, and load/generation balance.
  • Explain market views, trading rationale, and P&L drivers to leadership and help shape desk-level strategy.
  • Evaluate capacity markets and other structured products for their hedging or trading value in ERCOT, PJM, and other markets as Base expands.
