Power Systems Engineer

M2X Energy IncRockledge, FL
$135,000 - $175,000Onsite

About The Position

M2X is looking for a Power Systems Engineer to own electrical power, end to end, across our project sites and our modular gas-to-methanol plants. This is a dual-scope role that sits at the intersection of utility-facing electrical infrastructure and onboard power electronics. On one side, you will lead the power development for our project sites: working with utilities, designing interconnections, and specifying the switchgear, panels, and distribution that bring grid and behind-the-meter power to our equipment. On the other, you will develop the power conversion system that lets our modular plant generate its own power onboard, conditioning raw AC output and combining it cleanly with power from site generators and the grid. You will need to be equally comfortable in a utility interconnection meeting and at the schematic level of a power converter design, and you should enjoy owning a problem from concept through commissioning.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in power systems engineering, power electronics, or utility interconnection, with direct hands-on design responsibility.
  • Demonstrated experience with utility interconnection processes, distribution design, and equipment such as switchgear, panels, transformers, and protective relaying.
  • Experience with power conversion topologies, including rectification, inversion, and synchronization/paralleling of multiple AC sources.
  • Working knowledge of relevant codes and standards (e.g., NEC, IEEE, and utility interconnection requirements such as IEEE 1547).
  • Proficiency with electrical design and analysis tools (e.g., SKM, ETAP, AutoCAD Electrical, or similar).
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to perform hand calculations, load studies, and simulations to support design decisions.
  • Excellent communication and project management skills, with the ability to interface directly with utilities, contractors, and cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites and plant build/test locations as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • 8-10+ years of experience spanning both utility-scale interconnection/distribution and power electronics or converter design.
  • Experience integrating behind-the-meter generation (gensets, renewables, or storage) with grid services on industrial or commercial sites.
  • Experience with SiC- or IGBT-based power converter design and control.
  • Experience with electrical systems in industrial or process plant environments (oil & gas, chemical, or manufacturing).
  • Familiarity with modular or skid-based plant design, fabrication, and field deployment.
  • Experience leading design reviews and approving drawings and calculations prepared by other engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the technical owner of electrical power infrastructure at M2X project and deployment sites, from early site assessment through commissioning.
  • Lead engagement with utilities to scope and execute grid interconnections, including load studies, service upgrade requests, and interconnection applications and agreements.
  • Design and specify site electrical infrastructure: switchgear, transformers, distribution panels, protective relaying, and metering, sized to plant loads and utility requirements.
  • Plan and integrate onsite behind-the-meter generation (gensets and other distributed energy resources) alongside grid service to support plant operations.
  • Develop single-line diagrams, load lists, short-circuit and coordination studies, and electrical scope packages for EPC partners, contractors, and internal stakeholders.
  • Manage interconnection studies, permitting, and utility coordination timelines across multiple concurrent project sites, keeping schedules and budgets on track.
  • Act as the primary point of contact with utility engineers, EPCs, electrical contractors, and authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs) for all site power matters.
  • Support commissioning and startup of site electrical systems, including switchgear energization, protective device testing, and utility witness testing.
  • Own the design and development of the power system that generates and manages electrical power onboard M2X's modular plant.
  • Design and develop the plant's power converter: conditioning raw AC waveforms from onboard generation to clean AC, and combining that power with AC supplied by site generators and/or the grid.
  • Define the architecture for the plant's power electronics, including rectifiers, inverters, DC bus design, filtering, and protection, suited to a modular, skid-mounted industrial environment.
  • Specify and integrate generator sets, alternators, and associated controls that supply power to the plant's process loads.
  • Develop control strategies for synchronization, paralleling, and load-sharing between onboard generation, site generation, and grid-supplied power.
  • Partner with controls/automation engineers to integrate power system monitoring, protection, and interlocks with the plant's SCADA/PLC systems.
  • Perform power quality, harmonic, and load-flow analysis to ensure stable operation across variable generation, islanded, and grid-tied conditions.
  • Support factory acceptance testing, module integration, and field commissioning of the power conversion skid.
  • Drive continuous improvement of the power converter design based on field performance data and lessons learned across deployments.
