Power Regulator Responsible Engineer, Project Sunrise

BLUE ORIGIN•Longmont, CO
•$144,179 - $201,850

About The Position

Blue Origin’s Advanced Concepts and Enterprise Engineering (ACE) team supports the company’s mission of enabling people to live and work in space. The team advances innovation, future engineering workflows, shared solutions and standards, simplicity, lower costs, and manufacturable design. This role supports Project Sunrise, a satellite constellation of orbital data centers. The Power Regulator Responsible Engineer serves as the box-level owner for power regulator products. These products regulate power from the solar array, regulate power to and from batteries, and convert power from the High Voltage DC (HVDC) bus to low-voltage DC power for compute hardware. The engineer owns the regulator as an integrated product and leads a multidisciplinary team spanning ASIC and circuit design, electromagnetic design, board layout, thermal management, mechanical design, firmware, manufacturing, and test. The role is the technical integrator and single point of accountability for the product, from requirements definition through design, qualification, flight, and production-line setup. The production line is expected to begin at megawatt-scale annual quantities and scale rapidly to gigawatt scale. The engineer also has programmatic ownership, with responsibility for delivering on time and at a cost competitive with terrestrial equivalents. Design decisions must balance space-grade reliability with manufacturing yield, unit cost, test throughput, and schedule. The position requires hands-on design and analysis of high-voltage, high-frequency switching power converters; ownership of hardware verification and qualification; and leadership of the transition to high-rate manufacturing. The position requires U.S. citizenship or nationality, U.S. permanent residency, or lawful admission as a refugee or grant of asylum.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • At least 8 years of hands-on experience designing, testing, and debugging switching power converters, such as DC/DC, DC/AC, or battery charge/discharge regulators.
  • Experience as a box-, assembly-, or product-level Responsible Engineer, or in an equivalent technical lead role, accountable for an integrated multi-card unit through integration and test.
  • Design experience with high-voltage power electronics above 100 V, including bus architecture, protection circuits, and PCB layout that explicitly considers creepage, clearance, and thermal management.
  • Experience selecting and sizing power semiconductors (Si, SiC, and/or GaN), gate drivers, and magnetics.
  • Proficiency performing and documenting power electronics analyses, including worst-case analysis, derating, stability, power dissipation, transient response, and reliability.
  • Hands-on experience leading or substantially contributing to a hardware qualification campaign, including test plan development and anomaly resolution.
  • End-to-end product development experience from requirements definition through qualification and production release.
  • Familiarity or fluency with AI tools and their application to design optimization, analysis, or requirements management.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Nice To Haves

  • Graduate degree in Electrical Engineering focused on power electronics, or a related technical field.
  • Experience with solar array regulation, battery charge/discharge systems, and radiation-tolerant design practices.
  • Deep experience with high-frequency, wide-bandgap GaN/SiC converters, advanced topologies such as resonant or isolated converters, and high-frequency magnetics design.
  • Familiarity with digital control of power converters using FPGAs, microcontrollers, or custom ASICs.
  • Background in high-volume industries such as automotive or data centers, with a focus on DFM/DFT, production test, and yield improvement.
  • Expertise with modern design and simulation tools such as Altium Designer, LTspice/PLECS, and Python.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the single-threaded owner and Responsible Engineer for the Power Regulator, leading a multidisciplinary team and owning product architecture, requirements, interfaces, and budgets from concept through production.
  • Lead hands-on design and analysis of high-voltage, high-frequency switching power converters, including topology selection, component sizing, control strategy, schematic design, and electrical, thermal, and reliability analyses such as WCA and FMEA.
  • Own the hardware verification and qualification strategy, develop test plans for prototype and flight hardware, lead anomaly investigations, and ensure validation for the space environment.
  • Drive transition to high-rate manufacturing, champion Design for Manufacturability and Test (DFM/DFT), define automated test requirements, and collaborate with production teams to meet cost and schedule targets.
  • Deliver the product on time and at a cost competitive with its terrestrial equivalent while balancing reliability, manufacturability, yield, test throughput, and schedule.
