About The Position

The City of High Point's Electric Department is seeking to fill multiple Powerline Technician positions at all levels (Level I, II, and III). This role involves performing installation, maintenance, and repair work on low and high voltage electrical lines, as well as associated equipment like hardware, fuses, and transformers. Responsibilities also include tree trimming for clearance, pole and equipment installation/removal, and maintaining streetlights and other lighting systems. The technician will install overhead and underground services, work on energized and de-energized circuits, and be available for 24-hour standby during emergencies. Driving and operating specialized vehicles like line trucks and bucket trucks is also required, ensuring all work adheres to OSHA and City Safety Standards. The role includes handling trouble calls on a rotation schedule within six months of hire.

Requirements

  • High School or GED equivalent
  • Valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL)
  • General knowledge of electric line construction, maintenance and repair and the hazards encountered
  • CPR and First Aid certification within 12 months
  • Certification on other approved courses as required, such as OSHA or Lineman Career Development Training within six (6) months of employment
  • Power Line Tech I – Minimum of two (2) years of Powerline Experience (Exemption for lineworker certification from an accredited school)
  • Power Line Tech II – Minimum of two to five (2 - 5) years of Powerline Experience
  • Powerline Tech III - Minimum of ten (10) years of Power Line experience (Experience may consist of a Power Line Helper, Technician I, Technician II, or some combination of those)

Responsibilities

  • Performs installation, maintenance, and repair work on low and high voltage electrical lines
  • Performs maintenance, installation and repair of hardware, fuses, transformers, and related equipment associated with the operation of the City's electrical system
  • Cuts down, trims and removes trees, shrubs, and other growth away from power lines, rights-of-way and easements
  • Performs installation, maintenance and removal of poles, cross arms, substation apparatus and various other equipment
  • Performs installation and maintenance of streetlights, security lights and other equipment within the lighting system
  • Installs overhead and underground services
  • Performs required line work on energized and de-energized circuits
  • Performs, as needed, 24-hour standby for emergency operational assistance under adverse weather conditions
  • Drives and operates line trucks, bucket truck, and auxiliary vehicles and equipment when needed
  • Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies
  • Handles trouble calls on a rotation schedule within 6 months of hire date
