About The Position

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we’re the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain — and we’re looking for talented people who want to help. You’ll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You’ll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And you’ll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion. As an Amazon Power Generation Infrastructure Engineer, you will provide full life-cycle engineering support to AWS Data Centers' Power Generation Systems (PGS) from design inception through commissioning, operation, maintenance, and continuous improvement. You will be the senior 'go-to' engineering resource when technical advice is needed on power generation technologies, and will leverage deep subject matter expertise across diesel generators, natural /gas turbine systems, fuel cells, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and emerging technologies such as Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). You will engage with diverse cross-functional teams to: Lead troubleshooting, Root Cause Analysis (RCA), and Corrective Action (CA) documentation for power generation system failures and Site Impairment Events (SIEs). Directly support operational issues with ad-hoc training, complex operating procedure reviews, and critical event support for power generation equipment. Interface with internal data center design engineering, server hardware, environmental health and safety, and controls teams to promote standards that maintain consistency and reliability in power generation services delivered. Work on concurrent projects, sometimes across multiple geographical regions. Initiate and lead engineering audits including on-site visits within Amazon's owned or collocated data centers; produce reports outlining risks with recommended mitigations and remediations. Act as resident engineer during new construction projects; support construction, commissioning, and turnover of power generation systems. Serve as Single Threaded Owner (STO) for critical power generation investigations, driving resolution of open cases and reducing SLA non-compliance across the fleet. Assist with regulatory compliance and reporting related to air quality, emissions permitting, fuel storage, and spill prevention.

Requirements

  • 6+ years of industrial or commercial engineering in mission critical facilities including but not limited to: data centers, power generation or oil and gas facilities experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field
  • Experience developing solutions and executing plans on complex projects
  • Experience performing complex business case analysis to justify technical decisions and presenting the justification to management in a high-level review
  • Experience researching new designs, technologies, and construction methods of data center equipment and facilities

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of building codes and regulations for your region
  • Experience carrying design concepts through exploration, development, and into deployment or mass production
  • Experience reading, interpreting, and creating construction drawings, specifications, and submittal documents
  • Experience with multiple power generation technologies: diesel generators, natural gas/gas turbine systems, fuel cells, BESS, and/or emerging technologies such as SMRs.
  • Experience as a resident engineer or hands-on power generation design consultant or owner's engineer; ability to carry design concepts through exploration, development, and into deployment at scale.
  • Deep understanding of environmental regulations related to diesel emissions, fuel storage, spill prevention, and air permit compliance.
  • Understanding of electromagnetic induction, alternator operation, and three-phase power generation including voltage regulation and field current control.
  • Experience with generator synchronization, load management, paralleling operations, and ATS systems.
  • Experience with power generation systems load testing, commissioning procedures, and acceptance testing
  • Registered Professional Engineer (PE) and/or advanced degree in engineering, business, or related field.
  • Fluent knowledge of continuous operating redundant electrical systems including UPS, AC/DC conversion, diesel generator systems, and complex power distribution arrangements.
