About The Position

Champion Petfoods is expanding and seeking a 4th Class Power Engineer/Building Maintenance Associate to join their growing company. Champion Petfoods is an award-winning pet food maker with over 35 years of trust, known for its ORIJEN® and ACANA® brands, and is a significant player in the global premium pet food industry. The Power Engineer, 4th Class is responsible for the safe and reliable operation of a pressure boiler, supporting production operations through maintenance of facility and process equipment, and performing pre-operational equipment inspections and preventative maintenance at the Acheson kitchen. This position reports to the Supervisor, Maintenance.

Requirements

  • 4th Class Power Engineering Certificate valid in the Province of Alberta
  • Minimum two years' work experience performing repairs in a food production facility environment
  • Solid knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems
  • Ability to use power and manual tools
  • Good organizational abilities, including planning and execution skills, with attention to detail
  • Strong basic mathematical skills
  • Solid basic computer competency
  • Self-directed, with ability to successfully work independently
  • Good interpersonal skills with ability to successfully work with diverse groups within a team environment
  • Effective attention to detail, sound analytical thinking, planning, prioritization and execution skills
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Fluent in English, both written and spoken
  • Able to work well under pressure
  • Able to deal with people sensitively, tactfully, diplomatically, and professionally at all times
  • Ability to pass a Drug & Alcohol and Fit-to-Work test up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to clear a Criminal Record Check and provide references

Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with Company's policies, practices, and procedures related to Health and Safety, Food Safety, and the Environment.
  • Support Kitchen production operations through timely, efficient, and cost-effective maintenance of facility and process equipment.
  • Perform department PMs, including cleaning, lubricating, and other routine maintenance work.
  • Operate a pressure boiler safely and reliably.
  • Provide emergency/unscheduled repairs of production equipment during production and perform scheduled maintenance repairs as directed.
  • Troubleshoot machine and production problems by diagnosing defects in equipment.
  • Efficiently set up, inspect, and shut down production-related equipment.
  • Operate and monitor mechanical controls on equipment.
  • Adjust functional parts of devices and control instruments.
  • Develop and maintain good communication with Production staff regarding maintenance parts and services lead times.
  • Promote and support a positive and safe work environment with Maintenance co-workers.
  • Continuously strive to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, and streamline work processes.
  • Keep detailed and accurate maintenance reports and documentation.
  • Comply with all safety training, departmental SOPs, and regulations related to equipment and chemical approvals for a food manufacturing facility.
  • Participate in departmental housekeeping practices, including keeping the maintenance shop and surrounding areas clean.
  • Dismantle and assemble equipment and machines for deep cleaning purposes.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant industry technologies and codes.
  • Demonstrate awareness and understanding of corporate policies, practices, and procedures regarding health and safety and the environment.
  • Perform other tasks as required or assigned.
