About The Position

Aurelius Systems is a VC-backed defense tech startup focused on developing autonomous, edge-deployed directed energy systems for counter-unmanned aerial systems (C-UAS). The company aims to create the first cost-effective, reliable, and robust laser weapon system. The Power Electronics Engineer will be responsible for the entire power subsystem of a directed energy weapon, from battery pack architecture to laser diode delivery. This role involves setting the architecture, making technical decisions, and ensuring system performance during field testing. The engineer will work closely with an Electrical Engineer on broader electrical scope, focusing deeply on areas such as Battery Management System (BMS) architecture, high-voltage conversion, fault protection, and power delivery under field conditions. The goal is to quickly diagnose and resolve power system issues during field tests.

Requirements

  • 3–8+ years in power electronics with direct hardware design experience, from schematic to field deployment.
  • Deep BMS experience including pack architecture, cell balancing, thermal and fault management, and high-voltage integration.
  • Experience designing and validating 48V+ conversion and regulation systems under real operating conditions.
  • Ability to set technical direction for power systems independently.
  • Hands-on wire harness design and fabrication experience for deployed systems.
  • Proficiency in Altium Designer, SPICE, and MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Strong background in thermal management, EMI/EMC, and ruggedized system design.
  • BS or MS in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, or a related field (experience is valued more than degree).
  • "U.S. Person" status as defined by U.S. law (U.S. citizen, legal permanent resident, or certain protected classes of asylees and refugees).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with laser diode driving or directed energy power systems.
  • Experience with long-duration system deployment in harsh field environments.
  • Familiarity with MIL-STD standards and ITAR compliance.
  • Background in EMI/EMC design and shielding.
  • Active security clearance or ability to obtain one.

Responsibilities

  • Architect, build, and validate battery management systems for high-voltage packs, covering safe charge/discharge, cell balancing, thermal management, and fault protection.
  • Design high-voltage DC/DC converters, rectifiers, inverters, and diode driver electronics for laser power delivery.
  • Design and fabricate ruggedized wire harnesses for high-power laser and motor systems, including connector selection, routing, shielding, and environmental protection.
  • Drive hands-on prototyping, assembly, and field testing on a 400+ acre range.
  • Execute electrical, environmental, vibration, shock, and robustness testing to validate system reliability.
  • Perform electrical simulations (SPICE, MATLAB/Simulink) to optimize designs.
  • Conduct Design for Manufacturability (DFM) reviews and collaborate with fabricators for production.
  • Integrate power systems with mechanical, optical, and robotics subsystems.
  • Generate schematics, Bills of Materials (BOMs), wiring diagrams, and documentation compliant with MIL-STD and ITAR standards.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary + equity
  • United Health Care medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • Flexible 18 days PTO + 5 sick days
  • Travel to field test events and range days
  • Covered daily lunches and office snacks + drinks
  • E-bike / scooter stipend (Up to $500)
  • Direct access to leadership and real ownership over your work
