About The Position

As a Power Electronics Applications Engineer, you will be at the forefront of designing next-generation electrical systems for Trane Technologies’ premier climate control products, with a heavy emphasis on our industry-leading industrial chillers. This role is housed within the Electric Systems and Components (ESC) group—a key branch of our global Advanced Concepts and Capabilities team in Corporate Engineering. Our mission is to identify, develop, and deploy leading-edge technologies that directly enable sustainable product growth and establish our businesses at the absolute cutting edge of the industry. By joining this team, you will directly support Trane Technologies' flagship Gigaton Challenge, which aims to reduce our customers' carbon footprint by 1 Gigaton of CO2e by 2030 through aggressive electrification and decarbonization. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or Engineering Physics.
  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant electrical engineering work experience.
  • A strong interest in HVAC applications, operating conditions for industrial refrigeration equipment, and the application of battery energy storage systems.
  • Experience with electric systems simulation software (MATLAB SimScape, PLECs) and ability to present data showing why a particular architecture is preferred over another.
  • Strong understanding of embedded control systems with the ability to specify and integrate different modules into a functioning system.
  • Experience with system communications, message databases, and analysis tools is preferred.
  • Custom engineering development scripts to run design verification tests.
  • Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal skills. You must be adept at translating complex technical information and presenting it clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Self-motivated and capable of managing small-scale projects, establishing clear priorities, tracking risks/obstacles, and executing to tight deadlines.
  • Competency in Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, Project, and PowerPoint) to track project milestones and draft engineering documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a self-guided owner of your projects. Develop project plans, prioritize tasks, achieve scheduled milestones, and proactively identify quality and productivity improvement opportunities.
  • Participate on teams to work through customer issues to make choices to keep Trane Technologies at the forefront of technology.
  • Filing to patents on intellectual property to novel solutions as you translate end-product solutions into system and power electronic module requirements.
  • Use your expertise in multiple power electronic topologies to develop DC-DC converters, AC-DC-AC power conversion units, and other advanced devices.
  • Translate end-product duty cycles into detailed requirements and model thermal management, EMC/EMI compliance, and motor control algorithms.
  • Conduct in-depth analysis and model-based simulations of electromechanical rotational machines, power electronics, and control systems using tools such as Matlab/Simulink/SimScape, PSIM, and PLECS.
  • Develop laboratory test plans, select and define strategic testing equipment, and lead qualification testing.
  • Analyze test data and prepare comprehensive technical reports to ensure design reliability, durability, and safety.
  • Partner with Supply Chain and Procurement teams to support supplier onboarding and part-release workflows (including engineering drawings, BOMs, and technical specifications).
  • Network across the enterprise to identify opportunities to integrate new technologies.
  • Partner with product teams, customers, and suppliers to resolve technical issues and keep Trane Technologies at the cutting edge.
