About The Position

HRL Laboratories pioneers the next frontiers of physical and information science, delivering transformative technologies in automotive, aerospace, and defense. HRL advances the critical missions of its customers to help them remove limitations and create competitive advantage. HRL then transitions the work back to customers – ready for real-world application. For more than 70 years, HRL’s rich portfolio of scientific discoveries and engineering innovations continues to build on each other. As a private company owned jointly by Boeing and GM, HRL prioritizes purpose over profit, significantly advancing the state of the art. HRL Laboratories develops radiofrequency, millimeter-wave, and electro-optical sensors using state-of-the-art materials and device fabrication processes to deliver agile, mission-ready systems. Our high-performance solutions are highly integrated, architecturally low cost, and optimized for size, weight, and power efficiency while leveraging commercial, custom, and novel mixed-signal innovations. We are looking for an engineer to plan and perform testing and integration of electronic circuits and equipment, including medium to high-voltage (e.g. > 600V) switching amplifiers and circuits. An ideal candidate will thrive working with hardware in a hands-on role and will have previous experience with power electronics (e.g. linear power supplies, switching power supplies, transducer drivers, class-D audio amplifiers, power converters, or switch drivers) as well as analog, logic, and radio frequency circuits. Testing will mainly include circuits based on high-voltage high frequency SiC or GaN devices, but an opportunity also exists to work with microwave and mmW circuits and sub-systems.

Requirements

  • B.S. or M.S. degree in electrical engineering
  • At least 1 year of experience testing and integrating power, control, or analog electronics
  • Experience wiring, constructing, fabricating, assembling, or repairing physical items
  • Electrical/Electronics fabrication (prepare wiring harnesses, solder, etc.), computer programming (e.g. Matlab, Python, C/C++, LabView, etc.), and debugging electrical circuits
  • Basic lab test equipment (e.g. Oscilloscope, power supply, signal generator/analyzer, network analyzer, impedance analyzer, etc.)

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with SiC or GaN devices is desired.
  • Experience with voltages above 1 kV is a plus.
  • Experience with printed circuit board layout and circuit simulation (e.g. Altium, SPICE) is a plus.
  • Knowledge of switch-mode power electronics circuits, electronic test equipment and techniques, digital logic, and safety.
  • Knowledge of analog, signal conditioning, and radio frequency circuits.
  • Working knowledge of wiring and interconnects is desired.
  • Knowledge of magnetic component design and construction (e.g. transformers) is a plus

Responsibilities

  • Contribute technical expertise in the area of power electronics design, implementation, and test
  • Work within diverse teams, taking primary responsibility for testing and integration of high-performance custom power electronics components and subsystems with switching frequencies up to 1 MHz or more. Examples are linear power supplies, switching power supplies, transducer drivers, class-D amplifiers, power converters, switch drivers, etc.
  • Work with lead designers to develop and execute test plans; integrate and re-work experimental circuits; operate prototype equipment and test equipment; record, organize, and document test data; and identify and work with management to procure/maintain needed equipment and tools
