The Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine in the College of Veterinary Medicine at The Ohio State University is seeking a 12-month Clinical Assistant or Clinical Associate Professor. The primary responsibilities will be to teach poultry and preventive medicine within veterinary and graduate school curricula and to lead outreach efforts in support of Ohio’s poultry producers and veterinarians. Faculty effort is anticipated to be approximately evenly divided between teaching and outreach, with smaller portions of the appointment devoted to scholarly activity and professional or academic service. The specific distribution of effort will be adjusted to reflect the strengths and interests of the successful candidate but will remain predominantly teaching and outreach. This position is part of a larger hiring effort within the College of Veterinary Medicine to support the creation of a Center for Emerging Infectious Diseases as a component of the Protect OHIO initiative (https://vet.osu.edu/about/Protect-OHIO). Teaching responsibilities will include poultry health and production topics within the preclinical and clinical DVM curriculum. Additional teaching will include topics such as animal welfare, food safety, infectious diseases, or other components of veterinary preventive medicine, with specific topics tailored to the strengths of the candidate. Outreach responsibilities will center on fostering connections among poultry veterinarians, regulatory agencies, and the academic community, while working directly with producers across Ohio. Strong communication skills are essential, and the successful candidate will need the flexibility needed to engage with diverse poultry production systems across Ohio (backyard, mid-sized, and large commercial flocks) and have the ability to tailor messages to a wide range of audiences, including students, producers, veterinarians, academic colleagues, and regulatory agencies. The faculty member will develop, deliver, and evaluate outreach programs that provide timely, science-based, and prevention-focused information directly to producers at locations across Ohio. The duties will additionally include coordination with diagnostic laboratories and producers for on-farm investigations and support for Ohio private practitioners working with poultry producers. The primary focus of this position is teaching and outreach. However, in response to stakeholder interest in enhanced veterinary support for small- and mid-sized poultry producers, there may be opportunities for the successful candidate to help develop clinical or consultative service activities under the umbrella of The Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center. Engagement in clinical service is not a requirement of the position; rather, this component would be developed only if aligned with the interests, expertise, and career goals of the selected candidate. The successful candidate will additionally serve as an important collaborator for research and provide service to the College and the veterinary profession.
