About The Position

The Pullen Arts Center Pottery Studio Coordinator will work in coordination with the Pottery Studio Manager to ensure the smooth operation of the pottery studio. This includes managing kiln firings, maintaining studio cleanliness and organization, mixing glazes, and supporting studio users and instructors. The role requires a strong understanding of pottery practices, safety protocols, and excellent communication skills to foster a welcoming and functional environment for students, members, and staff.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Pottery experience, including basic experience mixing glazes, loading and unloading kilns, and generally keeping up a pottery studio.
  • Ability to lift 25 lbs. regularly and 50 lbs. occasionally.
  • Awareness of safety issues common in pottery studios and best practices.
  • Ability to responsibly wear a respirator and other required PPE.
  • 4+ years experience working with clay
  • 2+ years managing a pottery studio (home or community studio)
  • Understanding of basic glaze chemistry and characteristics of clay bodies
  • Understanding of wheel throwing and hand building techniques
  • Ability to work as a member of a team
  • Professional oral and written skills
  • High level of motivation, flexibility, and organization
  • Enthusiasm for working with and supporting other potters

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience working in a community studio is a plus.
  • Previous experience firing a gas kiln is not required, but the candidate must be willing to learn.

Responsibilities

  • Load and unload student and patron pottery into and out of studio kilns in a timely and safe manner.
  • Document all firings.
  • Perform basic studio troubleshooting and maintenance.
  • Mix studio glazes.
  • Help to keep the studio clean and organized.
  • Create content for the monthly studio user newsletter.
  • Assist with planning and implementation of studio socials.
  • Assist with clay deliveries and inventory management.
  • Assist in firing the gas kiln.
  • Support instruction in both adult clay classrooms and the new youth pottery classroom.
  • Ensure the pottery studio, including the kiln room, glaze room, and outdoor kiln area is kept clean, organized and in compliance with City of Raleigh safety standards.
  • Set the tone for the open studio program through a helpful, welcoming, but firm presence.
