About The Position

The City of Guelph is seeking an experienced potter with training in ceramics and a passion for teaching to instruct both adults and children in pottery. This part-time role involves teaching beginner to advanced courses in pottery, including Pottery on the Wheel and Teen Pottery. The instructor will be responsible for setting up and cleaning up program activities, planning and implementing age-appropriate lessons, ensuring participant safety, and creating a welcoming and inclusive environment. The position requires availability for scheduled program days and times, including weeknights and potential weekend Open Studio time. The instructor will also ensure facilities and equipment are maintained and act as a resource for participants.

Requirements

  • Highly responsible and punctual
  • Extensive ceramics background and past teaching experience
  • Thoughtful, energetic and passionate about teaching
  • Ability to problem-solve and work both independently and in a team environment
  • Ability to communicate and interact positively
  • Extensive knowledge in handbuilding and pottery on the wheel
  • Extensive knowledge in glazing and firing pottery in kilns
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to respect and maintain participant confidentiality
  • A satisfactory Police Record Check including Vulnerable Sector Check is required at time of offer
  • Standard first Aid with CPR C
  • Full availability is required for scheduled program day and time

Responsibilities

  • Set-up and clean-up of program activities
  • Plan and implement age-appropriate program activities
  • Responsible for taking the necessary steps for always ensuring the safety of both children and adults in the program (following City of Guelph process and procedure)
  • Teach a well-thought-out weekly plan, incorporating different ceramics techniques.
  • Have weekend and weeknight availability to facilitate Open Studio time.
  • Create a welcoming environment for all participants
  • Communicate with the program team
  • Responsible for the health and safety of participants and complete incident/accident forms when needed
  • Ensure facilities and equipment are maintained and kept in an acceptable, safe condition.
  • Act as a resource for program participants
  • Provide fully inclusive programming to participants of all abilities and skill levels
  • Provide modifications where required
  • Ensure participant confidentiality
  • Other duties as assigned
