The Department of Materials Science and Engineering in the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences at Penn State seeks postdoctoral scholar applicants at the University Park campus. Several positions are available that focus on metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and related materials. Scholars will use synthesis and characterization capabilities in the 2D Crystal Consortium facility and engage with related activities focused on developing AI tools and workflows to accelerate thin-film materials research. Example research opportunities include developing MOCVD growth, characterization, and doping processes for TMDs in support of p-type device development; investigating new precursor chemistries for TMD growth employing in situ spectroscopic ellipsometry to monitor growth and accelerate process development and related topics. The specific research focus will be shaped by the scholar’s expertise and the needs of the program. Postdoctoral scholars will plan and conduct experiments, analyze relationships among growth conditions, material structure, and properties, and communicate results through publications, group meetings and conference presentations. Working with collaborators, they will help develop data-rich experimental workflows that connect MOCVD synthesis and in situ measurements with AI-assisted planning, analysis, and feedback. The work offers opportunities to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams including researchers focused on materials characterization, computational modeling, device fabrication and machine learning and intelligent system design.
