HSOM Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurobiology - Postdoctoral Fellow
About The Position
The Niwa laboratory in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurobiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is seeking a creative and motivated postdoctoral fellow. The research aims to investigate how psychosocial stress affects behaviors via altered neuronal function and connectivity in the brain. The ultimate goal is to understand the biological mechanisms by which the endocrine system controls the developmental trajectory of brain and behavior. This will be achieved by combining mouse behavioral assays, in vivo monitoring of neuronal activities in freely-behaving mice, optogenetic/chemogenetic modulation of neuronal activities, neural circuit tracing, and epigenetic/gene expression analysis to unravel the underlying mechanisms from the molecular and cellular to the circuitry and behavioral levels. The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurobiology offers a strong supportive research environment in both laboratory and clinical settings, with enriched research resources through the UAB Neuroscience community. The postdoctoral fellow will be encouraged to develop their own research within the overall goal of the laboratory and will have an opportunity to participate in the highly interactive scientific community at UAB.
Requirements
- Doctoral level degree (M.D. and/or Ph.D.) in neurobiology, neuroscience, neuropsychophrmacology, biomedical engineering, system biology, molecular biology, or a related field.
- Strong analytical and communication skills.
- Dedication to basic research.
Nice To Haves
- Experience in rodent behavioral assessments
- Experience with optogenetics
- Experience with electrophysiological and/or in vivo imaging methods
Responsibilities
- Perform behavioral assays
- Perform neurochemical assays including in vivo microdialysis
- Perform circuit mapping
- Perform in vivo calcium imaging with a miniature epifluorescence microscope in conjunction with optogenetic manipulation in the neurobiology and neuroendocrinology of parenting, emotional, motivational, and social behaviors
- Collaborate with colleagues inside and outside the laboratory
- Develop own research within the overall goal of the laboratory
