About The Position

The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences is currently recruiting for a Postdoctoral Scholar for Dr. Cynthia Ebinger's lab. This position involves conducting independent research, publishing findings, presenting results at international meetings, contributing to grant proposals, mentoring students, and participating in collaborative research and departmental activities.

Requirements

  • PhD in Earth Science, Geophysics, Rock Mechanics, or a related field
  • Demonstrated experience in computational fluid dynamics, fracture mechanics, and numerical modeling of flow in porous media
  • Experience working with earthquake and geodetic data
  • Experience in analytical and numerical modeling of small to large scale seismic and aseismic process
  • Experience in fluid dynamics or fluid mechanics
  • A record of peer-reviewed publications relevant to Earth system sciences
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in modeling time space patterns of diffusion and poro-elastic effects associated with fluid injection and extraction
  • Experience pore pressure changes, slip, and permeability evolution in sedimentary basins
  • Experience with Discrete Element Modeling (DEM), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Finite Difference Modelling (FDM) and knowledge scientific programming languages MATLAB, FORTRAN, Python
  • Experience mentoring students or contributing to collaborative research projects

Responsibilities

  • Delineate lateral crustal heterogeneities using geophysical data and compare to earthquake locations, volcanic rock occurrences in eastern North America
  • Evaluate critical mineral exploration potential associated with intrusive volcanic rocks
  • Use numerical models to predict stress concentrations at boundaries
  • Use analytical and numerical formulation of earthquake physics (fault mechanics, Couloumb stress transfer, rate and state friction) and flows in porous media (poro-elasticity, computational fluid dynamics) to study earthquake hazard across the East Coast passive margin with and without fluid injection to the subsurface.
  • Conduct independent research and publish findings in leading peer-reviewed journals.
  • Present research results at major international scientific meetings such as AGU and other relevant conferences.
  • Contribute to the preparation of grant proposals for federal funding agencies (e.g., NSF, DOE).
  • Mentor and supervise undergraduate and graduate students within the research group.
  • Participate in collaborative research activities and contribute to interdisciplinary projects.
  • Contribute to the academic environment of the department through seminars, outreach, and departmental activities.
