About The Position

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is hiring Postdoctoral Experimental Physicists to independently execute experiments and/or develop instrumentation in support of Extreme Light, Matter, and Fusion (LMF) and OMEGA laser-matter research. The work involves planning, designing, executing, and overseeing experiments in areas including laser-plasma interactions, hydrodynamics, radiation transport, implosion physics, material strength, and nuclear physics. The positions are within the High Energy Density Scientific & Technology Program in the Extreme Light, Matter, and Fusion Principal Associate Directorate. This is a temporary, mentored postdoctoral training appointment for researchers in the early stages of their postdoctoral careers, with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years. Applicants must have received a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate within five years of the anticipated start date. The position is onsite. The stated annual salary range is $118,594–$131,174, with placement depending on factors such as competencies, education, qualifications, experience, skills, location, and organizational needs.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in plasma physics, hydrodynamics, shock physics, spectroscopy, condensed matter, nuclear physics, dynamic material science, or a related discipline.
  • Experience in experimental physics in one or more of these areas: laser-plasma interactions, hydrodynamics, radiation-driven hydrodynamics, radiation transport, condensed matter, nuclear physics, or high energy density experiments.
  • Comprehensive analytical, experimental, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with x-ray, optical, charged-particle, or nuclear diagnostics, including development, calibration, or fielding, and associated analysis techniques.
  • Proficient written and verbal communication skills to author technical and scientific reports, publications, and invited papers, and deliver scientific presentations.
  • Interpersonal skills to collaborate and work effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to perform independent research.
  • Must have received a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate within five years of the anticipated start date.
  • Must be eligible to access the Laboratory in compliance with NDAA Section 3112 restrictions.
