About The Position

The Postdoctoral Associate will provide a broad range of complex laboratory and research related tasks. Working under general supervision of Dr. Mahoney in the Department of Neurology, incumbent will be involved with research projects under the Division of Cognitive and Sensorimotor Aging (DCSA). Duties include developing and conducting sensorimotor studies, writing papers, and applying for grants. The incumbent will conduct research and ensure that all experiments are appropriately conducted following the policies and procedures of Stony Brook University. The incumbent will have excellent interpersonal skills, exercising strong organizational and time-management skills with an exceptional attention to detail. Essential for this role is the adeptness to work independently as well as be part of a team with a collaborative approach to problem solving.

Requirements

  • Doctoral Degree (or foreign equivalent) in Kinesiology or a closely related field.
  • Experience studying and measuring exercise, physical activity, and muscle quality in older adults with or without pathology.
  • Experience with multimodal skeletal muscle assessment: Independently able to apply tensiomyography and ultrasound to evaluate skeletal muscle structure and function, able to analyze MRI images of skeletal muscles
  • Image analysis: quantify muscle architecture and fat fraction using ImageJ, 3D Slicer, Dafne, MuscleMap.
  • Experience working with research databases.
  • Experience collecting and analyze data, including periodical/literature search and utilizing.
  • Mastery of Excel & Statistical analyses using software packages like SPSS or R
  • Experience with Interdisciplinary collaboration across multiple academic and clinical departments
  • Strong publication history (3 or more 1st author papers)
  • Experience with teaching.
  • Experience translating research into practice like developing applied training and educational programs for healthcare professionals.
  • Experience with Internal/external grant application submissions.
  • Willing to help with lab maintenance, including equipment maintenance and ordering of supplies as needed

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to collect, analyze and interpret data that will investigate the relationship between lower extremity muscle functions, multisensory integration, and cognition.
  • Experience and willingness to participate/assist in manuscript writing for publication in scientific journals.
  • History of attending and presenting at national and or international scientific conferences

Responsibilities

  • Other duties assigned, which may include attending various Scientific Conferences and meetings, coordinating field and laboratory work and/or developing and maintaining databases. Incumbents may be responsible for orienting/training others to the project/program and checking work of less experienced employees.
