About The Position

The Postal Assistant role at Haynesville Correctional Center is responsible for processing all mail, both internally and externally, for staff and inmates. This includes receiving and inspecting all incoming and outgoing inmate mail for contraband, and receiving and distributing departmental mail daily in compliance with federal, state, and departmental regulations. The position also involves developing, updating, and maintaining related documentation and reports, and assisting the Operations Department with maintaining ACA standards and required documentation.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of basic office practices and procedures.
  • Demonstrated skill in the use of Microsoft Office to include Word and Excel.
  • Demonstrated ability to read, interpret and apply written policies and procedures.
  • Ability to organize and complete work assignments with minimal guidance from others.
  • Ability to interpret, understand, and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Must be able to lift bags and bulk packages weighing up to 35 pounds, place and retrieve documents/packages from shelves approximately six feet high.
  • Must be able to push a wheeled carrier with mailbags and packages not exceeding 50 pounds.
  • Must also be able to stand, walk and sit for extended times and distances.

  • Previous working experience keeping records.
  • Demonstrated ability to read, interpret and apply written policies and procedures.
  • Some knowledge of corrections.
  • Skill in working with postal equipment and/or mail sorting systems.
