The Post-Surgical Inpatient Manager serves as the chief retention officer for their unit/department, fostering peer preceptor and mentoring relationships, and supporting new hires through a structured orientation program. This role involves coaching, providing feedback, and articulating clinical nursing practice issues to ensure staff have the necessary resources to deliver quality nursing care. The manager also involves RNs and other unit staff in unit governance, mentors leadership skills, and role models reward and recognition programs. They monitor and document staff performance, take disciplinary measures when necessary, and conduct exit interviews to improve unit retention. Additionally, the manager collaborates with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure quality patient care, participates in hospital committees and quality improvement projects, and manages, develops, implements, and evaluates standards of nursing for efficiency and cost-effectiveness. This includes strategic planning, monitoring compliance with regulatory standards, and fostering an environment of clinical excellence. The manager also collaborates with the medical director and nursing staff on patient care planning, staff education, and conflict resolution, establishes staffing requirements, and assumes 24-hour accountability for their assigned area. They are responsible for preparing and managing departmental budgets, including supplies, equipment, and personnel, and ensuring appropriate processing of expenses and monitoring of resource utilization. The role also requires personal and professional growth, maintaining unit and management competencies, and staying abreast of current standards of care, new trends, technology, and methodology in healthcare.
