About The Position

Lorenz Clinic of Family Psychology is offering a nationally recognized, full-time, paid psychotherapy training position for pre-licensed mental health clinicians pursuing LICSW, LMFT, or LPCC licensure in Minnesota. This two-year fellowship is designed for clinicians who want the pre-licensure period to be genuinely developmental, focusing on relational, systemic, and developmentally informed psychotherapy rather than high-volume billing. The program utilizes a cohort model with an interprofessional composition, fostering a rigorous and formative training experience. The fellowship aims to produce psychotherapists skilled in working with a second-order theory of change, using the therapeutic relationship as a vehicle for transformation, and holding clients in genuine depth across seven developmental domains. The curriculum addresses 16 APA Competency Benchmark domains through structured supervision, monthly seminars, weekly didactic seminars, monthly grand rounds, and monthly case consultations. Fellows provide psychotherapeutic services to approximately 12-18 clients under supervision, with options for outpatient psychotherapy (individual, couples, family, group) or intensive outpatient group psychotherapy. The fellowship serves as a pipeline into the clinic's clinical and supervisory ranks, with a high percentage of fellows finding staff positions upon completion. Alumni have gone on to successful careers in private practice, community mental health, and leadership roles, distinguished by their clinical thinking and systemic case formulation.

Requirements

• Master's degree in psychology, clinical counseling, marriage and family therapy, social work, or closely related field from a regionally accredited program.
• Successful completion of a clinically focused master's-level practicum or internship where individual psychotherapy (including diagnosis, treatment planning, and ongoing therapeutic work) was the primary activity.
• LICSW-track applicants: a social work degree alone is not sufficient; placements focused primarily on case management, care coordination, or generalist social work services do not meet this requirement.
• Declared licensure track (LICSW, LMFT, or LPCC in Minnesota).
• Social work track applicants must hold a current, non-provisional LGSW before the start date.
• Completed master's-level practicum totaling at least 9-12 months of clinic-based formation where outpatient psychotherapy was the primary focus, prior to the start date.
• Practicum placements that were primarily remote or telehealth will not be considered.
• Demonstrated track record of sequential, scaffolded clinical learning aimed at a career as a psychotherapist.
• Curiosity about what they do not yet know, openness to feedback requiring growth, and orientation toward the profession as a vocation rather than a credential.

Responsibilities

• Provide psychotherapeutic services to a variety of clients under direct supervision.
• Carry an active caseload of approximately 12-18 clients, built gradually during the first months of the fellowship.
• Participate in 8 hours/month of supervision with a doctorally prepared psychologist and a professional supervisor.
• Attend monthly PMF Seminars (8 hours) for didactic content, experiential activities, guest practitioners, and small-group discussion.
• Attend weekly Didactic Seminars (1 hour) covering topics such as ethics, family systems, attachment, trauma, and psychopathology.
• Participate in monthly Grand Rounds for case presentations or invited speaker events.
• Engage in monthly Case Consultations (4 hours) focused on clinical formulation.
• Actively engage with the program's structures, including bringing real cases to consultation, using the supervisory relationship collaboratively, and participating in training groups.
• Develop the capacity to stay curious about client and self experience, work with ruptures in the therapeutic alliance, access and use internal experience as clinical information, develop case formulations grounded in history, understand the developmental narrative as an active structure, hold clients through regression, and adopt a formulation-first clinical mind.
