About The Position

The Hearing Research Laboratory of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at MUSC invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow position. Potential research projects involve animal models of sensory impairment and postmortem human nervous tissues. These experiments aim to better understand neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental disorders, including age-related auditory nerve dysfunction, noise-induced hearing loss, and hearing impairment in animal models of autism.

Requirements

  • PhD, or MD/PhD in scientific areas relevant to neuroscience and neurodegenerative diseases, including cellular and molecular biology, immunology, genetics, gene therapy, and regenerative medicine.
  • Excellent record of research experience and expertise in molecular biology and/or neuroscience and in vivo animal study.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid drivers license.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Ability to learn and use new processes, tools and equipment as required.

Nice To Haves

  • The ideal candidate will have an excellent record of research experience and expertise in molecular biology and/or neuroscience and in vivo animal study.

Responsibilities

  • Execute and develop new experimental procedures for investigating the important roles of the innate immune system and cochlear glial cells in hearing loss.
  • Conduct and develop research projects for the study of the cellular and molecular mechanisms of auditory function impairment and hearing loss in neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental disorders (e.g., with aging, genetic deficiency, physical and environmental insults) in vivo animal models and postmortem human tissues.
  • Be responsible for the preparation of the training grant applications, research manuscripts and presentations in national and international meetings.
  • Be responsible for teaching and supervising graduate students, research assistants and junior lab members to perform physiological, molecular and cellular biological assays including in vivo mouse physiological and behavioral tests, RNA isolation for high throughput gene expression analysis, cell isolation and culture from adult cochlear and brain tissues, in situ hybridization, single cell RNA-seq and bioinformatics analysis, immunohistochemical assays, and super resolution imaging analysis.
  • Other duties, including the support of the research lab operations (e.g., IACUC/IBC document preparation and submission, and major equipment maintenance).

Benefits

  • The Postdoctoral Fellowship provides opportunities for training across a broad range of topics, including neurobiology (including inner ear biology), neuroimmunology, and auditory electrophysiology.
  • The training environment offers numerous opportunities to collaborate with investigators in a nationally-recognized center of neuroscience research and a well-established, and multi-disciplinary Hearing Research Group for the study of hearing loss at MUSC.
