About The Position

The behavior coach supports the overall academic mission by building adult capacity to implement positive behavior support practices. They will provide professional learning at the school and division level that significantly contributes to healthy, safe and caring classrooms. They will serve as a building resource for behavior intervention strategies. The behavior coach will implement and model student behavior interventions and support school data collection. The coach will facilitate data-based decision making to improve behavior in all school settings.

Requirements

  • Ability to work effectively with teachers, students, families, and systems in helping problem- solve solutions to barriers
  • Understand and interpret laws, policies and regulations in regard to special education and compulsory school attendance
  • Demonstrate an understanding of diversity and equity
  • Communicate and establish effective and ethical working relationships with co-workers, families, other professional and technical staff, social agencies, schools and the general public
  • Assist the school to manage crisis situations, prepare reports and maintain records
  • Knowledge of data collection and analysis to inform behavioral interventions
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills
  • Excellent time-management and organizational skills
  • Good public speaking skills
  • Computer proficiency in use of word processing software, spreadsheet software and database software
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Current (or be eligible for) Pupil Personnel License with an endorsement in School Social Work, School Psychology, or School Counseling or Professional Teacher’s License with extensive training and experience in tiered behavior interventions
  • Valid Va. Driver’s License

Nice To Haves

  • Master's Degree
  • Three academic years of successful experience working with school-aged children in an educational setting
  • Specific training and experience in Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports, Applied Behavior Analysis, and/or Boys Town methodology
  • Experience in developing and delivering professional learning opportunities for educators

Responsibilities

  • Maintains knowledge on latest procedures, and policies (local, state, and federal)
  • Contributes to a trusting, safe, respectful and inclusive learning environment
  • Provides coaching to school staff and individual teachers on tiered behavior practices for creating effective and safe classrooms
  • Supports teachers in building effective classroom systems through coaching and modeling
  • Supports the whole school in building effective behavior prevention systems across all school settings
  • Conducts individual and/or small group student interventions to include instruction in social skills and prosocial behaviors
  • Supports teachers with the collection and analysis of student behavior data
  • Leads and/or serves as a member of a tiered system of support school-based team for student behavior
  • Facilitates and collaborates on the development of appropriate student behavior interventions
  • Facilitates improved student behavior and interpersonal/intrapersonal skills through classroom observation, behavior data collection and participation on school problem solving teams
  • Supports schools with the collection of schoolwide behavior data and facilitates data-based decision-making practices
  • Collaborates with school teams to support immediate behavior needs and de-escalation
  • Advocates for students and promotes healthy school climates and safe learning environments
  • Collaborates with school teams to support the Comprehensive School Improvement Plan process
  • Develops and delivers professional development on behavioral topics, including effective classroom practices/systems and tiered behavior support at the school and division level
  • Collaborates with school teams to educate parents on behavioral interventions and accessing resources
  • Serves as a member of a school-based team that coordinates resources among home, school and community to address the needs of students and families
  • Collaborates with school teams to assist students, teachers, and families in identifying and remediating environmental factors that negatively impact the student’s school experience and/or adjustment to school
  • Collaborates with the behavior coach team to provide behavior related learning across the division
  • Collaborates with the behavior coach team to build and refine division resources that address behavior support needs and behavior prevention
  • Performs other duties as required
