About The Position

The Portfolio Strategy Management (PSM) team is dedicated to delivering Capital Group’s investment strategies in clients’ vehicles of choice. The Portfolio Strategy Management capability provides flexibility of access and customization that clients are seeking while delivering end investors a risk and return profile similar to that of a reference strategy. The Portfolio Strategy Manager exercises independent investment judgment on behalf of vehicle clients, oversees vehicle outcomes, represents the PSM capability internally and externally, and helps evolve the future of systematic portfolio construction and customization. This role is accountable for ensuring that CG’s investment convictions are appropriately reflected across vehicles while navigating market volatility, independent vehicle flows, guidelines, restrictions, tax considerations, transparency protection, liquidity, and client-specific requirements.

Requirements

  • In-depth knowledge of quantitative portfolio investing concepts and processes, index or active investment strategy replication, securities and investment business.
  • 10+ years’ experience in management or leadership capacity in a large, complex, global organization; financial services or investment management industry experience, strongly preferred.
  • Comprehensive understanding of investment products, asset allocation, securities operations and the servicing requirements of accounts.
  • Demonstrated track record in driving change, making a business more effective and efficient, and effectively influencing others.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills as well as the ability to effectively collaborate with various teams including Investment Group, Trading, IT and Global Investment Control
  • Working knowledge of the investment management industry, investment mandates, investment vehicle structures, investment operations, competitive landscape, reporting and regulatory environment.

Responsibilities

  • Exercise independent investment judgment on behalf of vehicle clients to deliver Capital Group’s investment convictions across vehicles while minimizing results dispersion or meeting other defined client objectives.
  • Maintain a deep understanding of Portfolio Manager and Analyst convictions and ensure those convictions are appropriately reflected in each portfolio, with discretion to tailor vehicle investment decisions to vehicle requirements and clients’ best interests.
  • Review and approve investment model designs and portfolio construction approaches, taking into account considering CG policy, client restrictions, transparency protection, tax management, liquidity, average daily volume, market conditions, and other vehicle-specific constraints.
  • Work daily with Portfolio Strategy Specialists (PSS) to review model output, approve recommended trades where they align with Investment Group conviction, and manage exceptions when recommended trades are not approved or aligned with conviction.
  • Uphold systematic portfolio construction principles and create, evolve, and maintain consistent decision-making frameworks that support timely and accurate execution of investment strategies across vehicles.
  • Retain accountability for vehicle health and outcomes, including the monitoring and oversight processes required to assess whether each vehicle is operating within expectations and following PSM policies and processes.
  • Oversee risk and return parameters to ensure the investment strategy remains recognizable in vehicles and that each portfolio is an appropriate representation of the reference strategy when aligned to client’s objective.
  • Partner with PSS to monitor vehicle portfolios, including excluded assets, cash accounts, regulatory and guideline restrictions, vehicle parameters, and other factors that may create risk or require resolution.
  • Identify and raise observations for additional research and analysis that arise from vehicle monitoring, investment results, dispersion analysis, and the broader PSM investment process.
  • Partner with strategy Investment teams when required for unique market events like IPO’s, secondary offerings, voluntary corporate actions, etc. while preserving PSM accountability for vehicle implementation and outcomes.
  • Serve as a business leader and subject matter expert representing CG, PSM, and vehicles across internal and external settings, instilling confidence in the PSM capability and communicating complex topics clearly.
  • Deepen partnerships across Investment Group, Principal Investment Officers, Quantitative Research and Analytics, Global Product Strategic Development, Investment Directors, Distribution, client-facing teams, and other adjacent business groups to ensure PSM portfolio construction, vehicle health, and business impacts are well understood and incorporated into plans.
  • Lead or support vehicle reviews across PSM investment strategies and help prepare internal partners to represent portfolios and explain the PSM capability at the right level for each audience.
  • Engage with home offices, research teams, gatekeepers, institutional clients, and other external audiences on complex questions regarding portfolio construction, vehicles, strategy delivery, and PSM investment services. This includes demonstrating product expertise and a deep understanding of client needs to ensure that vehicles remain effectively designed to achieve outcomes in a dynamic market.
  • Participate in or lead PSM governance forums, including Portfolio Strategy Investment Committee activity, Results Committee, and product development forums.
  • Conduct regular vehicle reviews with the strategy Principal Investment Officer.
  • Apply experience and judgment to collaborate on the development of new investment offerings and expand the uses of systematic portfolio construction, replication, and customization to meet current and future client and business needs.
  • Lead or contribute to product development and validation efforts for new PSM strategies in partnership with Investment Group and other business partners.
  • Evaluate expanded vehicle customization, tax management expectations, research portfolio mirrors, and new applications of existing investment services while assessing the impact on strategy delivery and vehicle outcomes.
  • Clarify role accountabilities, reduce duplication with PSS, and promote scalable tools, processes, and decision frameworks that support the continued growth and effectiveness of the PSM capability.
  • Navigate ambiguity as the role evolves, increasing tangible deliverables and accountable assignments across existing and emerging vehicle types and lines of business.
