The Portfolio Manager makes recommendations to purchase, sell, or hold investments in companies or limited partnerships in specified industries and related fields for the venture capital portfolio of the multi-billion-dollar State of Michigan Retirement Systems (SMRS) pension fund, and manages one or more investment portfolios. The role evaluates investment risks and returns through qualitative research—including meetings, conference calls, reading, and macroeconomic and microeconomic research—and quantitative financial modeling. It also contributes to asset-allocation recommendations and investment-manager selection, provides opinions and supports underwriting recommendations for assigned investments, and prepares reports to monitor fund performance and compliance with contract terms and applicable investment, compliance, and legal requirements. This position is eligible for a flexible hybrid schedule for Michigan residents: remote work on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays, with onsite work on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. All work must be performed in Michigan; remote work is unavailable to people residing outside the state. Remote arrangements require management approval and may be changed or discontinued. The selected candidate must have a secure, private workspace and commercial cable or wireless broadband with minimum speeds of 25 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload. Additional onsite work may be required. The position requires independent out-of-state travel by various modes of transportation on evenings or weekends as needed, including possible domestic or international assignments and overnight or extended stays. The role is within the Michigan Department of Treasury's Bureau of Investments, whose culture emphasizes customer service, continuous improvement, employee development, teamwork, initiative, and diversity and inclusion.
