About The Position

The Portfolio Manager I is a key contributor to the Center for Health AI (CHAI), a new WashU Medicine and BJC Health System joint effort. The center will harness the power of cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) and fundamentally change the way health care is provided. The center will focus on making care more personalized and effective for patients and more efficient and manageable for physicians, nurses and all those striving to ensure patients receive the very best care. The Portfolio Manager I supports the Senior Director, Agile Operations in executing the strategic needs of the Center and is responsible for the operational management and continuous improvement of CHAI’s AI governance processes. This role serves as the central coordinator for AI intake, review, and oversight activities, ensuring all AI initiatives are structured, compliant, and decision-ready for executive governance. The role also maintains the system of record for all AI applications across the organization. The ideal candidate will promote excellence in all aspects of technology in support of healthcare, research, and education and possess excellent communication skills. In addition, the position must be able to be successful in a dynamic environment, managing highly iterative and constantly changing requirements to enable delivery of desired outcomes, while at the same time being flexible. The ideal candidate will be accountable for execution of portfolio management strategy, ensuring that project progress is tracked and documented in alignment with both institutional and Center for Health AI strategies. This is a hybrid position with regular days in office on the medical school campus. CHAI supports a flexible work environment to support a range of work schedules and better work-life guardrails. The Senior Director will provide strategic direction, set governance priorities, and serve as the primary decision-maker for escalations, while the Portfolio Manager I will manage day-to-day intake, coordination, and execution of governance operations.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as the primary point of contact for AI solution intake.
  • Reviews submissions for completeness, clarity, and alignment with CHAI standards.
  • Guides stakeholders in refining submissions to meet governance expectations.
  • Routes proposals appropriately (full reviews, exceptions, expedited pathways).
  • Coordinates monthly governance meetings, including agenda development and presenter alignment.
  • Compiles and standardizes submission materials into executive-ready formats.
  • Documents decisions, conditions, and required follow-ups.
  • Tracks and manages action items resulting from governance decisions.
  • Maintains and evolves governance processes, including risk tiering and decision frameworks.
  • Standardizes and updates templates (intake forms, evaluation scorecards, executive summaries).
  • Identifies opportunities to improve efficiency and scalability of governance workflows.
  • Develops and maintains a centralized AI application inventory/database.
  • Tracks key attributes including ownership, use case, risk tier, approval status, and lifecycle milestones
  • Establishes and executes periodic audit processes to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Monitors renewal timelines and ongoing usage of approved solutions.
  • Ensures adherence to data privacy, security, and organizational policies.
  • Identifies and escalates risks, gaps, or non-compliance issues.
  • Partners with legal, compliance, and IT teams as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
