About The Position

The Porter is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and orderliness of the building, serving the residents, and performing various facility-related tasks. The role reports directly to the Facility Manager and ensures that the shelter operates with excellence and meets the needs of the program. Employees may be asked to work at other Salvation Army shelters as needed.

Requirements

  • Must be able to work comfortably within a difficult population.
  • Life experience along with food certificate can substitute for high school diploma.

Responsibilities

  • Report directly to the Facility Manager regarding all janitorial and facility related issues.
  • Immediately report any major building repairs, hazards, defects, and/or supply needs to the Facility Manager.
  • Clean bathrooms, including sinks, showers, and toilets.
  • Clean kitchen/serving areas, including sinks, counters, small appliances, serving utensils, steam table, and cart. Bag trash after meals.
  • Clean dining room tables, sweep and mop floors.
  • Clean the entrance of the building, hose sidewalk and entrance when required.
  • Remove ice and snow when required.
  • Remove garbage debris to proper areas.
  • Wash out trashcans and replace liners.
  • Work in the laundry room: fill and remove resident’s laundry from washer and dryer, fold and arrange laundry as requested.
  • Serve meals to residents on the respective shift.
  • Work in the clothing room and distribute clothing to residents.
  • Clean all public areas and workspaces as assigned.
  • Complete all work orders assigned.
  • Clean and maintain floors (strip, wax, buff, mop and/or vacuum) as assigned.
  • Paint and make minor repairs of the facility and facility property as assigned.
  • Assist with ground clean ups and snow removals as assigned.
  • Store and retrieve deliveries and supplies as assigned.
  • Assist in any special projects as assigned.
  • Take responsibility for proper care and maintenance of tools, supplies, and equipment.
  • Drive agency vehicles as needed and accurately track all mileage within the van logbook.
  • Retrieve and/or deliver interoffice mail to DHS and DHQ as needed.
  • Maintain a safe and sanitary workspace and follow all OSHA regulations.
  • Assume the same position at one of our other shelters operated by the Salvation Army at the discretion of the Operations Coordinator for Shelters or Salvation Army Department Heads.
  • Other assignments and tasks may be added at the discretion of the Operations Coordinator for Shelters or Salvation Army Department Heads.
  • Show respect and consideration for the people being served.
  • Demonstrate the ability to recognize priorities in organization of workflow.
  • Perform duties independently, with minimal need of direct supervision.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of clients, shelter/programs.
  • Demonstrate the ability to interact in a positive and helpful manner with clients, visitors, contract staff, volunteers and co-workers.
  • Reflect commitment to building a supportive work environment and maintain a positive attitude at the workplace and towards the job.
  • Project a good image in dealing with the public and its clients.
  • Be willing to make an extra effort to help build a quality and caring shelter/program.
