LBNFDUNE-US PORTABLE METROLOGIST

FermilabLead, SD
$41 - $51Onsite

About The Position

The Portable Metrologist will perform high-precision surveying and metrology activities supporting both surface and underground construction projects at Fermilab. This role involves establishing, verifying, and maintaining survey control networks, performing construction layout, and verifying survey-related quality control. The Metrologist will operate advanced surveying equipment, apply environmental compensation techniques, interpret engineering drawings and BIM data, and perform as-built surveys with detailed reporting. They will also identify and communicate discrepancies between design and field conditions, collaborate with various project teams, and ensure all surveying activities meet project tolerances, QA/QC standards, and safety requirements. The position requires work in both surface and underground environments, supporting rotating shifts and changing project priorities.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in Surveying, Geomatics, Civil Engineering Technology, or a related technical discipline plus three (3) years of professional experience in construction surveying, industrial metrology, infrastructure projects, or similar technical environments.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and relevant experience will be considered.
  • Advanced knowledge of construction surveying, field metrology, precision measurement techniques, and survey control methodologies.
  • Experience establishing and maintaining survey control networks, performing construction layout, and conducting high-precision as-built surveys.
  • Working knowledge of coordinate systems, geodetic principles, environmental compensation techniques, and construction tolerances.
  • Proficiency operating total stations, laser trackers, GPS/GNSS systems, digital levels, laser scanners (LiDAR), and other precision survey instrumentation.
  • Experience using survey and metrology software such as SpatialAnalyzer, Leica Cyclone, CloudCompare, Trimble Business Center, Leica Infinity, AutoCAD Civil 3D, or equivalent applications.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and BIM models to support construction execution.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with the ability to identify discrepancies between design intent and field conditions.
  • Ability to develop practical measurement solutions while maintaining required accuracy and project tolerances.
  • Excellent attention to detail with a commitment to producing high-quality technical documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with engineers, construction managers, ESH&Q personnel, subcontractors, and craft workers.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to clearly communicate technical information and survey results.
  • Valid driver's license with the ability to legally operate government vehicles.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional Surveyor (PS), Certified Survey Technician (CST), FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot, or equivalent certifications are preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform high-precision surveying and metrology activities supporting both surface and underground construction projects.
  • Establish, verify, and maintain survey control networks, benchmarks, coordinate systems, and alignment references for critical infrastructure and scientific facilities.
  • Perform construction layout and staking for excavation, structural concrete, utilities, mechanical systems, and electrical installations.
  • Verify survey-related quality control hold points to ensure alignment, elevation, and positional accuracy before critical construction activities proceed.
  • Operate advanced surveying and metrology equipment including total stations, GPS/GNSS systems, laser trackers, laser scanners (LiDAR), digital levels, and related precision measurement instruments.
  • Apply environmental compensation techniques for vibration, temperature fluctuations, humidity, and spatial constraints to maintain measurement accuracy in field environments.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and Building Information Modeling (BIM) data to accurately translate design intent into field layout and construction activities.
  • Perform as-built surveys and generate detailed reports, point files, maps, and documentation supporting quality assurance and project turnover.
  • Identify discrepancies between engineering design documents and field conditions and communicate findings to engineering and construction teams for timely resolution.
  • Collaborate with engineers, construction managers, ESH&Q personnel, and craft workers to ensure survey accuracy, constructability, and compliance with project requirements.
  • Ensure all surveying activities meet project tolerances, QA/QC standards, and Fermilab safety requirements.
  • Perform work in both surface and underground construction environments while supporting rotating shifts and changing project priorities as needed.
