About The Position

The Portable Life Support System Project Engineer will support the space program located in Houston, TX. This role involves performing project engineering functions for EVA spacesuit design, development, procurement, manufacture, test, and certification. The engineer will work in a team environment to analyze customer requirements and develop design solutions, as well as update plans and agreements for PLSS work scope with team leadership. Responsibilities include designing, developing, testing, implementing, and analyzing technical products and systems, including equipment and test configurations for PLSS hardware. The position also requires assisting with troubleshooting technical issues, reviewing engineering documentation for accuracy and compliance with NASA standards, and contributing to various reports and documentation.

Requirements

  • This position requires US Citizenship or Permanent Resident status due to the sensitivity of customer related information.
  • Must have a bachelor's degree in the field of engineering.
  • Must have 2+ years of recent and related work experience.
  • Must have experience with Microsoft Office Suite, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and TEAMS.

Nice To Haves

  • Detailed knowledge of vent loop gas flow rates, pressure management, and PLSS outlet CO2 control in closed loop and open loop modes.
  • Detailed knowledge on xEMU selected design goals for each vent loop component, including design and purpose, pressure capabilities, flow rates/delta pressure during flow, and functional operations.
  • Understanding of previous vent loop build/manufacturing issues and testing including component checkouts and DVT/TVAC testing.
  • Ability to describe the consequences of making various design alterations to the existing xEMU baseline design.
  • Detailed knowledge of thermal control and auxiliary thermal control loops including heat removal capabilities, pressures and flow rates, water/loop materials compatibility, issues with extended quiescent stowage.
  • Detailed knowledge of design trades that led to the selection of xEMU thermal loop component designs, hardware design, hardware build/manufacturing history including issues encountered and resolution, and testing including component checkouts and PLSS level DVT/TVAC testing.
  • Ability to describe the consequences of making various design alterations to the existing xEMU baseline design.
  • Experience with pressure systems including relief valves, pressure transducers, flow meters, and the calibration process of each is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform project engineering functions for EVA spacesuit design, development, procurement, manufacture, test, and certification.
  • Work in a team environment to analyze requirements from customers and develop design solutions.
  • Work with the PLSS Team leadership to update plans and agreements for PLSS work scope.
  • Design, develop, test, implement, and analyze technical products and systems.
  • Design equipment, design and assemble test configurations and complete testing of PLSS hardware.
  • Assist with troubleshooting and resolving technical issues identified during testing and integration.
  • Review engineering drawings, requirements, and system specifications to ensure accuracy and compliance with NASA standards.
  • Contribute to documentation, including test reports, hazard analyses, design reviews, procedures and TPS creation and execution.
  • Other duties as assigned.
