About The Position

The City of Valdez Port/Harbor Department is hiring for winter. This role provides general grounds maintenance, snow removal, and performs general security duties for Airport, Valdez Container Terminal, Kelsey Dock, Plaza & Uplands, and all other Ports and Harbors facilities and grounds. The position is temporary, non-benefited, and works up to 37.5 hours per week with a potential for a non-standard schedule. Responsibilities include ensuring proper safety procedures, being attentive to customer needs, performing security duties for regulated vessels, screening vehicles, enforcing Department of Homeland Security regulations, and working cooperatively with others. The role also involves snow removal around all Ports & Harbors facilities.

Requirements

• Must have High School Diploma or GED
• Must be at least 18 years old
• Valid Drivers License
• Will be required to undergo driving history review
• Requires line handling skills
• Thorough knowledge of boat moorage procedures and ability to accommodate many vessels properly
• Ability to recognize potentially hazardous situations and to contact appropriate persons as needed
• Skills needed to conduct routine maintenance, repair, cleaning and construction
• Some clerical experience and knowledge of office functions
• Attention to detail necessary for accurate and complete records
• Willingness to perform various job-related duties, as situations require
• Strong sense of teamwork and ability to work cooperatively with others
• Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule
• Ability to lift heavy objects and walk and stand for long periods of time
• Ability to communicate orally and in writing
• Ability to use equipment and tools properly and safely
• Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions

Nice To Haves

• Experience in marine infrastructure repairs and their construction
• Has knowledge of the Port Facility Security Plan
• Knowledge of the US Coast Guard and Homeland Security Regulations for Port Facilities
• Ability to read and understand technical documents

Responsibilities

• Provides general grounds maintenance, snow removal, and performs general security duties of Airport, Valdez Container Terminal, and Kelsey Dock, Plaza & Uplands and all other Ports and Harbors facilities and grounds.
• Ensure proper safety procedures are being followed, to protect staff, customers and equipment.
• Be aware of and attentive to customers’ needs, both on the water and in the upland facilities.
• Performs security duties for regulated vessels at the VCT and Kelsey Dock.
• Screens Vehicles, and enforces Department of Homeland Security regulations.
• Works cooperatively with other departments, external agencies and the public.
• Responsible for snow removal around all Ports & Harbors facilities.
