About The Position

The Port Engineer is responsible for scheduling, coordinating, and performing vessel repair and maintenance. This role involves coordinating the purchasing of parts and repair services, scheduling routine maintenance for tugs and barges, and performing vessel inspections to ensure adherence to repair and maintenance standards and procedures. The Port Engineer also ensures that tugs and barges comply with all regulatory agencies and maintains accurate records of all maintenance performed using the company's software program.

Requirements

  • Experience maintaining tugs and barges as a Chief Engineer.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience on tugs, tankers, oil barges or equivalent military experience.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in the maritime industry, ten + (10) years preferred.
  • Four year college education in Maritime field, related studies or have (5) years of experience as engineer on tugs, or other sea going motorized vessels.
  • Ability to repair marine equipment on site under adverse conditions.
  • Ability to work with others using courtesy, tact, and good judgment.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of all sensitive communications.
  • Ability to understand and execute complex oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal or no guidance.
  • Ability to get along with office staff and vessel crewmembers.
  • Must be physically fit enough to board barges and tugs at sea and in port.
  • Must be able to read, speak, write, type, and understand English in person and over the telephone.
  • Must be thoroughly familiar with tank barge operations, ship operations, and terminal/refinery operations.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Valid State drivers' license.
  • Valid TWIC or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment.
  • Use of Computer (Word and Excel), Copier and Fax Machine.

Nice To Haves

  • S. Coast Guard license on a Merchant Mariner’s Document strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of oil transportation and marine industry preferred.
  • Knowledge of tugs and barge maintenance systems and equipment.
  • First Aid/CPR training preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Schedule, coordinate, and perform flow of work based on customer orders, establish priorities and availability of personnel, equipment, and resources.
  • Keep records of maintenance performed, hours used, fuel burned, and report to different funding agencies.
  • Schedule routine maintenance of tugs and barges.
  • Manage oil analysis program.
  • Coordinate the purchasing of parts and services for repair and maintenance projects.
  • Perform inspections of vessels for repair & maintenance standards, regulatory Compliance and AWO RCP program.
  • Compile and prioritize worklists for each vessel for both routine and major maintenance (drydock periods).
  • Track actual costs of repair and projects against budget.
  • Perform emergency repairs on vessels as required.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Perform in the company Spill Management team as assigned.
  • Oversee team of port mechanics and vessel engineers to ensure tasks are completed in a timely manner.
  • Work together with Operations team to schedule repairs & preventive maintenance.
