About The Position

The Popular Education & Culture Director leads the organization's popular education work with and alongside Latinx working-class and immigrant communities. This role develops curriculum, train-the-trainer materials, and participatory learning tools that help people share their stories, build political understanding, grow leadership, and support organizing strategies for power-building and transformative change in Michigan. Grounded in servant leadership principles-including empathy, humility, stewardship, and commitment to the growth of others-the Director uses participatory action research (PAR), popular education, and story of self as core concientizacion methodologies. This body of work informs organizing strategies led by DHDC's Community Organizing & Advocacy team, by ensuring that learning, reflection, and leadership development are central to how the organization plans and moves for transformative justice.

Requirements

  • 5–8 years of experience in popular education, community organizing, adult learning, and curriculum development.
  • Strong connection to or experience working with Latinx working-class and immigrant communities.
  • Experience designing participatory curriculum and facilitation tools for grassroots or community-based work.
  • Deep understanding of popular education, PAR, and train-the-trainer models.
  • Skill in facilitation, communication, and relationship-building.
  • Commitment to immigrant justice, racial equity, and collective power.
  • Bilingual Spanish–English skills is a must.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in grassroots organizing, labor, or immigrant rights work.
  • Experience training community leaders and staff.

Responsibilities

  • Design and adapt popular education curriculum and facilitation tools rooted in the realities of Latinx working-class and immigrant communities in Michigan.
  • Develop and facilitate train-the-trainer programs so staff, members, and community leaders can lead popular education, PAR processes and other key organizing methodologies.
  • Support base-building, leadership development, and campaign planning by aligning concientizacion methodologies with organizing priorities.
  • Use participatory tools to help people analyze root causes of injustice, reflect on their experiences, and develop organizing strategies focused on supporting the COA teams build local campaigns.
  • Maintain a culture of learning and reflection that honors immigrant families' knowledge, worker experience, and community wisdom.
  • Lead internal strategies, trainings and practices that ensures the organization is grounded in the values and principals of a people-centered popular education framework.
