About The Position

Under the direction of the Aquatics Manager, the Pool Maintenance Technician I performs skilled work in the operation, maintenance, repair, and monitoring of the City of Louisville's aquatic facilities, including indoor and outdoor pools, spa, splash pad, and associated mechanical systems. Responsibilities include maintaining water quality, operating and maintaining pumps, filters, chemical feed systems, plumbing, and aquatic equipment while ensuring compliance with all applicable health and safety regulations.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High school graduation or GED equivalent.
  • One year of experience in pool maintenance, facilities maintenance, or related field.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and safe driving record for continued employment.
  • Extensive knowledge of mechanics, pumps, chlorinator systems, heaters, pool filters, pool systems, spray grounds, controllers, and backwashing procedures.
  • Extensive knowledge of chemicals used to balance pool water to maintain health and cleanliness of the pool.
  • Extensive knowledge of how to prepare outdoor facilities for summer and winterize pools at end of season.
  • Basic knowledge of how to read and understand Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
  • General knowledge of health department regulations as they affect swimming pools.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary to conduct safe working conditions around mechanical and electrical equipment and potentially hazardous chemicals including proper lock out/tag out procedures.
  • Basic knowledge of work safety rules and procedures.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical and plumbing systems.
  • Basic computer knowledge to research and write proposals to purchase equipment.
  • Skill in understanding and responding to customer needs.
  • Skill in communicating effectively with customers and staff to address questions.
  • Skill in using tools for required repairs including hand tools and power tools.
  • Skill in basic plumbing, electrical and mechanical repairs.
  • Skill in testing water and making necessary adjustments to pool chemicals to maintain health department standards.
  • Skill in performing daily routine maintenance at pools.
  • Ability to act quickly and calmly in emergency situations; perform preventative maintenance and make necessary repairs to equipment; inspect facility for cleanliness.
  • Ability to maintain inventories including pool chemicals, mechanical parts and safety equipment.
  • Ability to fill out necessary paperwork; read, understand and follow written and oral instructions, procedures and technical manuals.
  • Ability to exercise considerable initiative and sound judgment.
  • Ability to perform manual labor, including heavy lifting for extended periods of time under all weather conditions.
  • Ability to communicate clearly.
  • A valid Colorado driver’s license and acceptable driving record are required.
  • Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) Certification required.
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification or ability to obtain within first 90 days required.
  • These certifications must be maintained for continued employment.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors and maintains proper water chemistry in all aquatic facilities.
  • Inspects, maintains, and repairs pumps, motors, heaters, chemical feed systems, plumbing systems, valves, sensors, and pool accessories.
  • Conducts routine inspections of aquatic facilities and equipment.
  • Operates filtration, circulation, chemical feed, and disinfection systems.
  • Backwashes and cleans filtration systems as required.
  • Tests, records, and adjusts water chemistry to meet local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Conducts regular routine safety inspections of the aquatic facilities and pool equipment.
  • Identifies safety hazards and initiates corrective action.
  • Uses all required safety equipment.
  • Responds to water quality concerns and equipment alarms.
  • Assists in the inspection of heating system, pumps, slides, diving boards, chlorinators and other pool equipment to determine the most cost-effective means of maintenance, repair or replacement.
  • Makes necessary repairs, recommendations, and changes as required by our insurance company, federal and state government, health department and the fire department to be in compliance with all codes and regulations.
  • Maintains chemical logs and operational records.
  • Maintains inventory of chemicals, parts, and supplies.
  • Assists with procurement of supplies and equipment.
  • Completes work orders and maintenance documentation.
  • Assists with seasonal opening and closing of outdoor aquatic facilities.
  • Attends and contributes to in-service training sessions and staff meetings.
  • Proficiently operates equipment and tools in the maintenance, repair and installation of aquatic facilities.
  • Assists in training aquatic staff regarding pool operations and water quality procedures.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on aquatic systems and equipment.
  • Maintains current skills and knowledge in the proper and safe techniques of operating, repairing, and maintaining general pool equipment.
  • Operates a motor vehicle to travel between locations.
  • Responds to emergency calls on nights or days off as scheduled in the on-call rotation.
  • Responds to after-hours emergencies as required.
  • Participates in annual maintenance shutdown projects.
  • Assists with facility maintenance and snow removal as assigned.
  • This position is considered a critical/essential worker and is therefore responsible for responding to emergencies and/or disasters that may require additional overtime or adjustments to your normal schedule to fit the needs of the organization.
