About The Position

Humboldt Sawmill Company is seeking a Pony Rig Sawyer to join their team based in Scotia, CA! This is a non-exempt position at an hourly rate of $35.65. This position includes full benefits: Medical, Dental, Vision, 401K matching and life insurance. The Mendocino Companies (Mendocino Forest Products Company, Mendocino Redwood Company, Humboldt Redwood Company, Humboldt Sawmill Company, and Allweather Wood) own nearly 450,000 acres of Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC® C031337) certificated redwood and Douglas-fir timberland, constitute the largest waterborne wood treater in the Western USA, and is the largest producer of redwood lumber in the world. Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to read and comprehend written instructions, correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple, clear sentences.
  • Basic math skills, including the ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and perform multiplication and division using multiples of 10 and 100.

Nice To Haves

  • Two to five years of related sawmill or planer experience and/or training preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Basic understanding of timber grading rules preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Operates the pony rig, log carriage and conveyor system to saw logs into cants and/or boards in a safe productive manner.
  • Operate infeed deck and coordinates with log loader for efficient material flow.
  • Scans exposed log surfaces after each cut to determine grade and plan subsequent cuts.
  • Operates mechanical log turner to reposition logs on the carriage for continued cut processing.
  • Assists with saw changes and basic equipment adjustments as needed.
  • Communicates effectively with quad and edger operators to ensure smooth operations.
  • Maintains a clean, organized, and safe work area.
  • Performs additional duties or works in other areas as assigned.
