This position performs quality diagnostic polysomnographic (PSG), as well as titration, multiple sleep latency (MSLT), and Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT). The technologist records and provides relevant and accurate data to physicians for diagnostic use in the treatment of patients with sleep/wake disorders. The role also involves educating patients with prescribed therapies, potentially following up with patients, and providing education for sleep testing when necessary. Technical troubleshooting may be required. The technologist is responsible for performing either Sleep Study Procedures or Neurological Testing for all patient populations. A thorough understanding of testing equipment, including its structure, function, indications for use, physiological effect upon the patient, and basic maintenance/troubleshooting procedures is essential. The ability to apply principles of anatomy and physiology, normal and abnormal, related to the procedure performed is required. The role includes monitoring and documenting appropriately in the medical record per facility guidelines and demonstrating knowledge and understanding of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) standards and accreditation. A thorough knowledge and understanding of the disease and pathological conditions encountered is necessary, as is the ability to work with all age groups and those with growth and developmental needs of unique client populations. Other department-specific duties may be required, and depending on facility and department needs, participation in various types of scoring or tabulation of studies may be involved. The role may also involve overseeing students and/or staff providing patient care, treatment, and/or services as part of their training.
