Requirements

  • Current CA Respiratory Care Practitioner license or California Polysomnographic Technician license
  • BLS
  • High School Diploma
  • Within two years of hire/transfer must be enrolled in or have completed the A-STEP Online Self Study Modules; OR must be enrolled in or have completed training in a polysomnography program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC).
  • Minimum of six months experience as a Sleep (Polysomnographic) Trainee with proficient documentation in all required competencies by an accredited Sleep Center (AASM, JACHO or ACHC).

Responsibilities

  • Gathers and verifies patient information.
  • Explains procedures to patient, performs patient set-up: attaches electrodes and monitors to patient according to accepted standards.
  • Monitors patient via video for any unusual sleep behaviors.
  • Records observations of patient throughout the sleep study at specific time intervals and as appropriate.
  • Performs physiological calibrations.
  • Follows “Lights off” procedure to establish baseline values.
  • Performs data acquisition and ensures an artifact free signal.
  • Identifies, correct artifact and documents it.
  • Follows Sleep Study protocols such as Polysomnography, MSLT, MWT, PAP and oxygen titration.
  • Assists with scoring sleep vs. wake and identifies clinical events (such as respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, arousals, etc.) using AASM standards.
  • Assists with generating accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data.
  • Implements appropriate interventions (actions necessary for patient safety and therapeutic interventions such as positive airway pressure, oxygen administration, etc.).
  • Adheres to cleaning and disinfecting procedures for sleep testing equipment and sensors.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to perform portable monitoring equipment preparation and data download.
  • Performs patient instruction and education appropriate for home sleep apnea testing.
  • Assists with scoring portable monitoring recordings according to AASM guidelines.
  • Identifies artifact, inadequate signals and study failures and generates an accurate report.
  • Complies with applicable laws, regulations, guidelines, and standards regarding safety and infection control issues.
  • Maintains and operates all sleep lab equipment safely and correctly.
  • Inspects, tests and calibrates sleep lab equipment to ensure that it is functioning safely and efficiently.
  • Actively participates in performance improvement program, continuous quality improvement (CQI) activity and attends 90% of staff meetings.
  • Demonstrates computer skills appropriate for the position.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and services appropriate to the population served on the assigned unit or work area.
  • Knowledgeable of growth and development for all patient/family cultural, linguistic, spiritual, gender, and age specific needs.
  • Able to effectively communicate and care for patient and family as reflected in the Plan for Provision of Care.
