About The Position

This is a part-time, seasonal position focused on assisting in the conduction of elections. The roles involve customer service, problem resolution, operating voting equipment, and managing poll operations. Specific duties vary by role, from assisting voters as a Poll Clerk to managing personnel and overall poll operations as a Poll Coordinator. The positions require availability for training, setup, and long workdays on Election Day, with optional hours available during advance voting periods.

Requirements

  • Must be a U. S. Citizen and a resident of Athens-Clarke County.
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak the English language.
  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
  • No poll officer may be appointed who is a nominee for public office or is a candidate in the primary or election at which the poll officer shall serve.
  • No poll officer may be appointed who is otherwise holding public office, other than a political party office.
  • No poll officer may be appointed who is a parent, spouse, child, brother, sister, father-in-law, mother-in-law, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, brother-in-law, or sister-in-law of a candidate in any precinct where the candidate's name appears on the ballot in any primary or election.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license (for Assistant Poll Coordinator and Poll Coordinator, with exceptions for specific teams).
  • Must have reliable transportation capable of carrying supplies needed for an election (for Assistant Poll Coordinator and Poll Coordinator, with exceptions for specific teams).
  • Six months of personnel management/supervisory experience preferred (for Poll Coordinator).
  • Regular and predictable attendance is required.
  • Must work cooperatively with others.
  • Responsible for the safety, readiness, and operation of the vehicle if vehicle operation is required.
  • Must abide by ACC's safe driving policy if vehicle operation is required.
  • Ability to compile, organize, prepare, and maintain records, reports, and information effectively.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with poll workers, candidates, elected officials, and the public.
  • Ability to use independent judgment in routine and non-routine situations.
  • Ability to utilize and understand voting equipment and techniques.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and/or prioritize daily assignments and work activities.
  • Ability to comprehend and apply departmental regulations and procedures.
  • Ability to work with the public.
  • Ability to operate all aspects and components of the electronic voting system (for Assistant Poll Coordinators & Poll Coordinators).
  • Ability to read a variety of regulation manuals, forms, records, reports, and informational documentation.
  • Ability to speak to people with poise, voice control, and confidence.
  • Ability to learn and understand complex principles and techniques.
  • Ability to acquire and expound on knowledge of topics related to primary occupation.
  • Ability to record and deliver information, explain procedures, and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to add and subtract totals, multiply and divide, and utilize and determine percentages.
  • Ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape, visually with various record keeping, and office equipment.
  • Ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using record keeping, mail, and office equipment.
  • Ability to use the keyboard, lift, push, bend, and pull objects or materials.
  • Ability to handle a variety of items such as computers and other various office equipment.
  • Ability to use one hand for twisting or turning motion while coordinating the other hand with different activities.
  • Minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
  • May require the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.
  • Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.
  • Adaptable to performing under moderate stress when confronted with an emergency.
  • Ability to talk and/or hear.

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the conduction of elections at assigned polling locations.
  • Provide customer service to the voting public.
  • Resolve problems and answer questions related to voting.
  • Operate computers, Direct Record Electronic Voting Machines, Liberty Voting Systems, and poll pads (electronic voters list).
  • Perform preliminary work to ensure the poll opens on time.
  • Assist with managing personnel to ensure the poll functions properly.
  • Assist with setting up the poll on the Monday before Election Day.
  • Assist with close-out procedures and paperwork.
  • Ensure voters return voter access cards.
  • May serve as Assistant Poll Coordinator in the event of an emergency.
  • Assist Poll Coordinator in recruiting poll workers.
  • In the absence of the Poll Coordinator, assume responsibility for poll operations and management.
  • Arrange tables for stations to ensure smooth voter flow.
  • Relieve workers for breaks.
  • Assist with printing reports and tapes from voting units.
  • Complete Recap Sheets and paperwork to account for ballots and voters.
  • Return memory cards and supplies to check-in.
  • Pick up election supplies.
  • Announce poll opening and closing.
  • When assigned to Absentee Ballot Team: Process, sort, scan, and tabulate absentee ballots.
  • When assigned to Logic and Accuracy Testing Team: Test and process election equipment.
  • When assigned to Ballot Duplication Team: Hand-duplicate ballots for tabulation.
  • When assigned to Delivery Team: Load trucks with election equipment and unload at voting locations.
