About The Position

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol's primary mission is to reduce collisions and make the highways of North Carolina as safe as possible. The NCSHP has more than 1,600 troopers who cover nearly 80,000 miles of North Carolina roadways, more than any other state except Texas. In addition to enforcing the state's traffic laws, state troopers also guide traffic during hurricane evacuations, re-route traffic around hazardous chemical spills, and they stand ready should any act of terrorism occur. Consider this opportunity with the North Carolina State Capitol Police. The purpose of this position is to dispatch law enforcement, fire protection, and EMT personnel to requests for assistance through licensed two-way radio communications equipment; monitor computer assisted intrusion and fire alarm system, emergency and administrative telephones; handle walk-in complaints from citizens and /or refer the person to a police officer; monitor and operate the Division of Criminal Information computer terminal; maintain and control the daily log and complaint records/reports of a given shift; and make emergency notifications as requested by the officer in charge. This Telecommunicator position works to understand and interpret incoming communications and dispatch law enforcement, fire, and emergency units. Telecommunicators receive emergency and non-emergency calls, monitor alarms, security cameras, alerts, and other emergency inputs and react accordingly. Individuals in this role liaise between the public and public safety officials.

Requirements

  • Must meet the applicable education, employment, and training standards as required to be Department of Criminal Information (DCI) certified; must be DCI certified or become certified within 120 days of employment.
  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and sufficient experience to demonstrate an ability to work effectively under pressure situations; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Dispatching officers to calls at state-owned buildings and lots
  • Operating, reviewing, and inputting data into the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system, Division of Criminal Information (DCI) system, eWarrants, and CJLeads
  • Monitoring and operating state-wide alarm software while dispatching responders to appropriate sites
  • Recording information and statistics including upkeeping records
  • Answering and transferring calls to appropriate agencies and personnel
  • Monitoring and utilizing multi-channel radio software
  • Interpreting and relaying information to field personnel concerning wanted persons, violations of laws, and other criminal activities
  • Making immediate decisions on a wide variety of information received through various sources and disseminating this information to field personnel, agency officials, and other law enforcement agencies as appropriate
  • Researching information including phone numbers, directions, criminal histories, and driving histories using resources such as the court systems, internet, and Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS)
  • Entering warrants and stolen property into CJIS
  • Acting as backup to law enforcement officers with statewide to local jurisdiction, including the State Highway Patrol, civil defense officials, the Department of Transportation, and local law enforcement officials
