About The Position

The Medical Division of the New York City Police Department oversees the health and well-being of all members of the service. This division provides general medical services and assessments, processes medical records, FMLA, and disability applications. It also conducts internal investigations into sick leave protocols and the disability retirement system. The Occupational Health Assessment and Wellness Unit offers medical, educational, and nutritional counseling and utilizes a Mobile Health Vehicle to visit commands across the five boroughs. The Police Surgeon plays a crucial role in determining fitness for duty, managing treatment, authorizing medical services for line-of-duty injuries, and responding to hospitalized members. The role also involves participating in health fairs, providing expert consultations and testimony, and engaging in research and disaster drills.

Requirements

  • Possession of a valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York
  • Valid Board Certification issued by the appropriate American Specialty Board in any specialty area required by the Department

Nice To Haves

  • Board Certifications in Endocrinology, Infectious Disease, or Critical Care specialties

Responsibilities

  • Determine the fitness for duty of uniformed members of service
  • Follow member's course of treatment
  • Authorize medical services for line of duty injuries
  • Respond to hospitalized members of the service who are injured in the line of duty or seriously ill
  • Participate in Department health fairs and other medical initiatives
  • Provide consults in his/her area of medical expertise
  • Engage in Department research activities
  • Provide expert testimony as needed
  • Participate in all cause disaster drills
