About The Position

The James Madison University Police Department is accepting applications for a full-time Police Sergeant. This role involves supervising and maintaining a task force in cooperation with the Harrisonburg Police Department to provide University input and guidance to the policing of JMU students off campus. The Sergeant will also be responsible for meeting departmental standards on active shooter training and maintaining certification on department-issued firearms, assisting with patrol administration and operations, providing technical assistance in department equipment and management, supervising and managing the performance evaluation process, and providing effective supervision to employees. Additionally, the role includes supervising patrol operations and communications, and may require performing other assigned duties or assisting the agency or state government in the event of an emergency.

Requirements

• Must be a Commonwealth of Virginia Certified Police Officer
• Must have a valid Virginia driver’s license
• Must have completed Field Training
• Personnel who have spent a considerable amount of time in patrol.
• Strong understanding of case law as it's applied to Campus Policing
• Strong understanding of the U. S. Constitution as it relates to the 1st, 4th, 5th, and 6th amendments.
• A demonstrated understanding and commitment to the Mission of the James Madison University Police Department.

Responsibilities

• Supervises and maintains a task force in cooperation with the Harrisonburg Police Department in an effort to provide University input and guidance to the policing of JMU students off campus.
• Meets departmental standards on active shooter training and maintains certification on department issued firearms to include handguns and M-4 patrol rifle
• Assists with patrol administration and operation
• Provides technical assistance in department equipment and management
• Supervises and manages the performance evaluation process
• Provides effective supervision to employees
• Supervises patrol operations and communications
• May be required to perform other duties as assigned
• May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in a position consistent with a supervisor’s skill set in the event of an emergency
