About The Position

This position will attend and successfully complete the Alabama Peace Officers Standards certified basic police academy. This position reports to the Sergeant-Training.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Requirement exists at the time of hire and as a condition of continued employment.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
  • Knowledge of law enforcement training requirements.
  • Knowledge of criminal investigation and law enforcement principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of the equipment and tools used in law enforcement activities.
  • Knowledge of local government operations, policies and plans, and modern office practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other similar programs.
  • Skill in performing law enforcement and criminal investigation activities.
  • Skill in organizing and planning work.
  • Skill in performing basic mathematical calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and percentages.
  • Skill in decision-making and problem-solving.
  • Skill in effective communication, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to meet and deal with employees and the public in an effective and courteous manner.
  • Ability to get along with others, and work effectively with the public and co-workers.
  • Ability to deal with confidential and sensitive matters.
  • Ability to use computers for data entry, word processing, and/or accounting purposes.
  • Ability to work independently, work well with others, and manage time effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Attends, participates, and passes all requirements of the Alabama Peace Officer Standards and Training.
  • Develops awareness and understanding of the functions and responsibilities of a Police Officer including patrol procedures, report writing, Officer safety, use-of-force standards, and the ability to apply criminal and constitutional law.
  • Learn and follow Department rules, regulations, directives, and procedures.
  • Maintains assigned vehicle and equipment.
  • Performs special duty assignments and other related job duties as assigned.
