About The Position

The City of La Verne Police Department (LVPD) is seeking motivated and well-qualified candidates for the position of Police Recruit Trainee. This role involves full-time attendance at a Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certified Basic police academy to prepare for the duties of a police officer. Upon successful completion of the academy and meeting all department, state-mandated, and academy requirements, the recruit will be sworn in as a Police Officer. New Police Officers will serve an 18-month probationary period. The LVPD is committed to community service, transparency, and expanding community interaction through various programs. Requirements

  • Ability to observe accurately and remember faces, numbers, incidents, and places.
  • Ability to use and care for firearms.
  • Ability to think and act quickly in emergencies, and judge situations and people accurately.
  • Ability to learn, understand, and interpret laws and regulations.
  • Ability to prepare accurate and grammatically correct written reports.
  • Ability to learn standard broadcasting procedures of a police radio system.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain an appropriate, valid California driver's license.
  • Must pass a physical agility test (simulating actual job tasks like climbing obstacles and moving incapacitated persons).
  • Must pass the PELLETB (POST Entry-Level Law Enforcement Test Battery) written exam, unless a qualifying score from the past 12 months is provided.
  • Must pass an oral board interview evaluation.
  • Must undergo a medical examination (including drug screen), and credit and criminal reviews prior to hire.
  • Must be a United States citizen or lawfully authorized alien.

Nice To Haves

  • A PELLETB T-score of 42.0 or higher obtained within one (1) year of the application date may allow candidates to bypass the written examination.

Responsibilities

  • Attend a POST certified Basic academy approved by the City to obtain formal training in police work.
