About The Position

As a sworn member of the Los Angeles Police Department, a Police Officer maintains order, enforces laws and ordinances, and protects life and property. This role involves working with neighborhood associations and community members as a planner, community organizer, problem solver, and information link. Responsibilities include issuing citations, making arrests, preparing reports, and providing information to the public and departmental units.

Requirements

• At least 20 years of age at the time of application and 21 years of age by police academy graduation.
• Graduation from a U.S. high school, G.E.D. or equivalent from a U.S. institution, or a California High School Proficiency Examination (CHSPE) certificate.
• A two or four year college degree from an accredited U.S. or foreign institution may be substituted for the high school requirements.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law.
• Must complete the entry-level Peace Officer Supplemental Questionnaire at the time of filing.
• Must possess a valid Class C driver’s license issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) at the time of appointment.
• DMV record must not reflect three or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents, or a conviction of a major moving violation within the last 36 months.
• Must currently meet or be able to meet all standards set forth by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (CA POST).
• Any history of illegal drug use may be evaluated during the background investigation.
• Must comply with all current Department grooming and appearance policies, including policies related to tattoos and/or brandings.
• Must attach a copy of qualifying U.S. high school diploma or U.S. school transcripts to the on-line application at the time of filing if education was earned within the United States.
• For applicants with foreign education credentials, a high school diploma received outside of the United States will not be accepted.
• For applicants with foreign education credentials, college or university degrees earned outside the United States must be evaluated for U.S. educational equivalency by an active member of NACES or AICE and a copy of the credential evaluation report must be attached.
• Must successfully complete all required steps before being hired as a Police Officer.

• Candidates completing the selection process are required to provide proof of qualifying documentation.
• Applicants who received their high school diploma or college or university degrees from within the United States must attach a copy of their qualifying U.S. high school diploma or U.S. school transcripts to their on-line application at the time of filing in the Attachments section.
• Applicants must attach qualifying U.S. high school diploma or U.S. school transcripts BEFORE finalizing and submitting the application.
• Qualifying education must be from a college or university accredited by a City of Los Angeles recognized agency if your college or university degree was earned within the United States.
• Candidates unable to appear in person for the multiple-choice test may request to test remotely.
• Candidates unable to appear in person for the interview may request a virtual interview conducted remotely.
• You may waive the Multiple-Choice Test for this Police Officer examination if you satisfy any of the following conditions: you have passed the multiple-choice test for the Associate Community Officer exam for the City of Los Angeles on or after November 5, 2021; you have successfully completed the California POST Regular Basic Course; you possess a current Basic Course Waiver; you have received a passing score on the FrontLine National Law Enforcement Examination administered by the National Testing Network (NTN) based on the criteria set by the City of Los Angeles; or you have taken the California P.O.S.T. Pellet-B test and earned an overall T-score of 42 or higher.
• Candidates who previously received a failing score on the Physical Abilities Test and/or the Interview under this bulletin may retake these specific test parts after one month of the failed test part(s).
• Applicants disqualified prior to June 26, 2026, solely due to polygraph results and with no disqualifying admissions, may reapply to initiate a case-by-case review of their eligibility.
