About The Position

Under limited supervision, patrols assigned zone while exercising responsibility for the enforcement of state and local laws relating to public safety and welfare. Controls traffic, prevents crime or disturbances of the peace, and arrests violators. While working under often stressful, high-risk conditions, applies good independent judgment when dealing with dangerous or unusual situations and implements safe practices and procedures. Reports to the Patrol Sergeant, Patrol Lieutenant, or acting supervisor.

Requirements

  • Must be eligible to become Tennessee P.O.S.T. certified
  • At least twenty-one years of age by September 30th, 2026
  • Must be eligible to become licensed and qualified to operate a firearm
  • Possess valid driver's license with the ability to obtain a Tennessee driver's license
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from supervisors and the public.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of complex instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Develops constructive and cooperative working relationships with others.
  • Encourages others to express their ideas and opinions.
  • Provides input into identifying and solving problems.

Responsibilities

  • Performs policing duties: Patrols an assigned district in a patrol car, bicycle, or on foot, to observe assigned area for possible criminal activity or other conditions that could endanger public safety; investigates complaints and enforces laws; maintains high visibility.
  • Responds to requests for assistance by, or complaints from, the public via the dispatcher.
  • Identifies, investigates, and reports accidents, dangerous or defective streets, sidewalks, traffic lights, or other hazardous conditions to the appropriate departments or agencies.
  • Investigates crimes, interviews witnesses, complainants, and victims; gathers physical evidence and preserves such evidence for court use; conducts follow up investigations if necessary.
  • Apprehends, arrests, and detains criminal suspects and law violators when necessary; follows proper procedures when making arrests to ensure the safety of arresting officer, the public, and the suspect.
  • Enforces all applicable laws of the State of Tennessee and the City of Franklin; notes suspicious persons and establishments and reports to superior officer.
  • Maintains responsibility for the upkeep of patrol car and any related equipment that is the property of the City of Franklin.
  • Assumes control at traffic accidents to maintain smooth traffic flow, assists traffic accident victims, and investigates causes of accidents.
  • Completes paperwork related to policing duties.
  • Provides backup and security for Fire Department/EMS personnel when needed, keeping bystanders out of danger, safeguarding property, and rendering first aid in emergencies.
  • Maintains weapons and equipment.
  • Attends required periodic training sessions and seminars.
  • Performs special projects as directed.
