About The Position

Under the direction of a Police Sergeant, perform police protection and other law enforcement services to safeguard the lives, property and constitutional rights of the citizens of Calexico. This role involves responding to crime and accident scenes, emergency situations, and other requests for assistance. The officer will detect, apprehend, and arrest criminals, enforce laws and ordinances, perform booking procedures, control traffic flow, and enforce local traffic regulations. Specialized duties may also be assigned.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures used in police work.
  • Knowledge of State, County, and City laws and ordinances.
  • Knowledge of the geography of the City and specific areas of assignment.
  • Knowledge of rules of evidence and laws of arrest.
  • Knowledge of operation of a variety of specialized police vehicles and equipment.
  • Oral and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Enforce traffic laws, issue citations, make arrests, investigate accidents, and provide traffic control.
  • Provide first aid and rescue services at emergency scenes.
  • Investigate and take action on observed or reported harmful or illegal conditions.
  • Prepare descriptive reports and provide testimony about activities and actions taken.
  • Communicate with other personnel, law enforcement agencies, and healthcare providers.
  • Prepare accurate investigative reports, complete forms, and issue citations.
  • Conduct crime scene investigations, including photography, evidence gathering, and measuring.
  • Prepare cases for trial, including evidence preparation and court testimony.
  • Utilize and maintain specialized equipment such as firearms, police vehicles, radios, baton, and handcuffs.
  • Utilize a computer for report preparation and sketches.
  • Participate in or provide training on specialized police duties and in-service programs.
  • Conduct law enforcement classes in schools and make presentations to community groups.
  • Maintain proficiency in driving and the use of firearms.
  • Apprehend traffic violators, issue citations and warnings, and book offenders.
