About The Position

The Appalachian State University Police Department supports the university’s academic mission by assuming the leading role in maintaining a safe and welcoming environment in which the campus community can thrive. Responsibilities include constant attention to the areas of public safety, security, law and policy enforcement, crime prevention, customer service, problem solving, community engagement and service assistance to various departments and offices of the university. Through proactive patrol, community engagement, customer service, and problem solving, police officers serve as resources and leaders for the university community. Police officers protect all members of the community and university property, enforce laws and university policies, provide services and aid to members of the community, and proactively engage students, faculty, staff, and visitors in a positive manner with an emphasis on customer service.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalency.
  • Applicants must be eligible for certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct preliminary investigations
  • Write reports and prepare criminal case paperwork
  • Establish, preserve, and protect crime scenes
  • Collect and preserve evidence
  • Interview victims, witnesses, and suspects
  • Utilize the principles of procedural justice
  • Investigate vehicle crashes and prepare reports
  • Conduct lawful searches of people and property
  • Respond to calls for service related to medical issues
  • Engage in self-initiated vehicle, foot, motorcycle, and bicycle patrol activities
  • Establish effective working relationships and rapport with people from various racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds
  • Engage with others in a fair, respectful, and courteous manner, regardless of cultural differences.
  • Engage effectively with persons in various emotional and mental states
  • Accurately assess situations and determine an appropriate course of action
