About The Position

Police Officers perform responsible protective service work involving a variety of general or support duty police assignments. Much of the work is performed under emergency conditions and involves considerable personal hazard. Work is performed under regular supervision. The Police Officer has completed Basic Law Enforcement Training in the State of North Carolina, OR has two years of full time sworn officer experience out of state, OR has obtained the Military Occupational Specialty for a Military Police and served two of the last five years as a Military Police Officer. Individuals that are currently attending Basic Law Enforcement Training in the State of North Carolina will be considered for this position. The City of Jacksonville recognizes relevant education and experience above and beyond the requirements for the position. Education: 2.5% for Associate's Degree, 5% for Bachelor's Degree, 7.5% for a career relevant Master's Degree. Experience: Additional 1% per year up to 15 years relevant experience.

Requirements

  • Completion of Basic Law Enforcement Training in the State of North Carolina, OR two years of full time sworn officer experience out of state, OR obtained the Military Occupational Specialty for a Military Police and served two of the last five years as a Military Police Officer
  • Currently attending Basic Law Enforcement Training in the State of North Carolina will be considered
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent
  • Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina
  • Possession of Basic Law Enforcement certificate issued by the State of North Carolina
  • Possession of or ability to acquire CPR, MDT-DCI, Radar and Intoxilizer certifications
  • Must meet and maintain minimum training and experience requirements for position as established by the department and the State of North Carolina
  • Some knowledge of police methods, practices and procedures
  • Some knowledge of the geography of the City and location of important buildings
  • Some knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Police Department
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to prepare clear reports
  • Ability to deal courteously but firmly with the public
  • Ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances
  • Skill in the use of firearms and the operation of an automobile
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationship with associates and the general public

  • Interviewing victims and witnesses to obtain additional necessary information regarding crime, accident, violation, etc.
  • Investigating crimes, collecting evidence and conducting searches
  • Investigating traffic accidents
  • Responding to radio dispatches and answering calls and complaints
  • Issuing traffic citations
  • Serving warrants, summons, etc.
  • Completing arrest records
  • Making arrests and testifying in court
  • Providing police escorts
  • Directing traffic
  • Performing residential and commercial checks
  • Participating in a variety of in-service and special training programs
  • Responding to and investigating domestic disputes
  • Assisting other law enforcement agencies when requested or assigned
  • Ensuring all evidence is properly tagged and logged
  • May be assigned to crime prevention, investigations, SWAT, community response, traffic, juvenile, or related areas as specified
