Police Officer - Entry Level
About The Position
The Salem Police Department is seeking individuals who embody their core values of Collaboration, Honor, Integrity, and Compassion to join their team as an Entry Level Police Officer. This role involves participating in a competitive testing process, including physical fitness, reading comprehension, writing skills, and various examinations, followed by a strict background investigation. The department is a full-service agency with many special teams, operating out of a new 104,000 square foot facility equipped with employee amenities. The City of Salem, located in the Willamette Valley, is the state capital with a population over 180,000, offering a vibrant community with a mix of new and historic neighborhoods.
Requirements
- Be at least 21 years old at date of hire.
- Be a U.S. Citizen or have the ability to become one within 18 months of hire.
- High School graduate or have completed a G.E.D.
- Ability to complete departmental recruit training course and to gain eligibility for Basic Certificate issued by the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST).
- A valid Oregon driver's license, or out-of-state equivalent, or ability to obtain by date of hire; must pass driving records check and, if hired, maintain a driving record that meets the City's standard.
- No felony convictions.
- No convictions for crimes involving domestic violence.
- No dishonorable discharge from any branch of military service.
- No more than three (3) traffic (moving) convictions in the last three (3) years.
- Must pass the NTN Frontline National Test (NTN) with at least 70% in Writing, 70% in Reading, and 65% in Video/Media.
- Must complete the Oregon Physical Agility Test (ORPAT) in 6:30 or less.
- Out-of-state applicants may submit a valid PAT test from another state or the military if it is less than 12 months old from the job announcement closing date.
Nice To Haves
- Ability to obtain an Oregon driver's license within 30 days of becoming domiciled in the state if holding an out-of-state license.
- Out-of-state PAT equivalent.
Responsibilities
- Work periodic overtime and a variety of 24-hour rotating shifts including holidays and weekends.
- Complete departmental recruit training course.
- Gain eligibility for Basic Certificate issued by the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST).
- Pass pre-employment drug test (including marijuana).
- Pass pre-employment background check.
- Pass physical fitness testing, reading comprehension, writing skills, written, physical/vision, hearing and psychological examinations.
