About The Position

The purpose of this position is to protect life and property and enforce federal, state, and local laws. Job duties consist of related law enforcement duties. Successful performance contributes to the detection and deterrence of crime and to the protection of life and property. This is an entry-level position with educational and growth requirements for candidates that do currently possess an APOSTC certification. Incumbents are originally assigned to Patrol. Incumbents may be assigned to the Warrant or Community/School Relations Unit after the required time in service.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED (from an accredited institution) required AND ; ACT WorkKeys Assessment (BAT) required (see below) OR an Associates or higher degree from an accredited SACS college/university (attach either to application). Reading for Information (Workplace Documents) Pass Score 4. Locating Information (Graphic Literacy) Pass Score 4. Applied Mathematics Pass Score 3.
  • Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age.
  • Must have and maintain a valid Alabama driver's license.
  • Must be certified as required by the Alabama Peace Officers' Standards and Training Commission.
  • All applicants should be prepared to complete the Alabama Peace Officers Standards & Training Commissions' Ability and Agility Course at the closing date of the application process.
  • Must provide proof of your legal right to work in the United States.
  • Must meet citizenship requirements of the Alabama Police Officers Standards and Training Commission.
  • Must live within a 45-mile radius of the Police Department Administrative Office.
  • Must be able to lift at least 100 pounds repeatedly.
  • Must serve a minimum of two (2) years with the Prattville Police Department upon graduation from the Police Academy (36-21-7).
  • Willing to work overtime.
  • Willing to cooperate with the workload of the department.
  • Willing to attend continuing education courses.
  • Willing to travel.
  • Willing to comply with City of Prattville rules and regulations.
  • Must submit to drug screenings for this safety sensitive position.

  • Skill in operating police vehicles, firearms, and emergency equipment.
  • Skill in operating radios and communications equipment.
  • Skill in operating radar equipment.
  • Skill in restraining persons without causing physical harm.

Responsibilities

  • Patrols the city to detect and deter criminal activity and traffic violations.
  • Patrols city hall and schools to detect and deter criminal activity.
  • Responds to calls for service, including domestic disputes, assaults, burglaries, traffic accidents, lost or missing person searches, public service duties, stranded motorists, and others.
  • Apprehends, arrests, and processes offenders, including fugitives.
  • Conducts preliminary traffic and criminal investigations, including interviewing victims, complainants, and witnesses, gathering information and evidence, and securing crime scenes.
  • Provides assistance and backup support to other officers and emergency service providers as necessary.
  • Testifies in judicial proceedings as necessary.
  • Serves warrants.
  • Transports prisoners.
  • Completes all required reports and forms.
  • Inspects and maintains assigned patrol car, uniform, and equipment.
  • Assists motorists.
  • Provides escorts.
  • Provides traffic direction as needed for events such as parades, funerals, events, and school crossings.
  • Answers inquiries from the public.
  • Assists with community/school functions.
  • May serve on special teams, task forces or boards.
  • Attends daily shift meetings.
  • Provides training to department and other personnel in any areas of certification.
  • Performs other duties as needed or assigned.
